    A Sheffield councillor was left terrified by a man who turned up on his doorstep with a shotgun, it's been claimed.

    Along with being faced with a shotgun, on a separate occasion Councillor David Baker says he was barricaded in a house by two angry constituents who refused to let him leave.

    Councillor Baker, who represents Stannington, said it happened "a few years ago" when he was living in Oughtibridge.

    "I was looking into complaints from local residents about a certain farmer and landowner who was building a road from his home to the join the highway.

    "There was a knock at my door one day and when I opened it, this man was stood there with a shotgun over his shoulder.

    "It was much more common in those days for a farmer to carry a gun - but I had to take a step backwards.

    "He said, 'Forgive the gun, I've been out shooting rabbits', and then he went on to cross-question me about the issue. But the whole thing was dominated by the fact he had a shotgun with him."

    Councillor Baker's comments about abuse and intimidation come amid changes to local election ballot papers which mean that from now on, candidates' home addresses will not be published for security reasons.

    A father from West Yorkshire who wrongly believed his wife was having an affair killed her and their two children before jumping from a cliff, an inquest heard.

    Paul Newman, 42, hit Geraldine Newman, 51, over the head with a hammer and stabbed Shannon, 11, and Shane, six, at their home in Allerton Bywater in 2016.

    He then went to Holyhead, Anglesey, and jumped 240ft to his death.

    The coroner concluded Mrs Newman, Shannon and Shane were unlawfully killed and Newman took his own life.

    Wakefield Coroner's Court heard that his body was found at the foot of South Stack cliff, where he had proposed 17 years earlier.

    Coroner Kevin McLoughlin described the deaths as an "enormous tragedy" and said "no-one foresaw what was to happen".

    A dozen volunteers are being sought to help with Tuel Lane lock on the Rochdale Canal in Sowerby Bridge, West Yorkshire, the Canal & River Trust has said.

    The lock raises and lowers boats almost 20ft on the canal - that's more than the height of a typical double-decker bus.

    The lock was built in 1969 when the canal was restored and replaced two earlier locks, hence its depth, the trust said.

  4. Jail for man who preyed on 'vulnerable' women in Doncasterpublished at 15:49 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2019

    A man has been jailed for 12 years after being found guilty of raping two women in Doncaster.

    Anthony Dorey, formerly of Howville Road, Hatfield Woodhouse, was found guilty of two counts of rape during a trial at Sheffield Crown Court.

    The 26-year-old was also found guilty of one count of sexual assault.

    The court heard how Dorey had targeted his victims, who cannot be named for legal reasons, during nights out in Doncaster.

    Det Insp Anna Sedgwick, of South Yorkshire Police, said: "Dorey is a dangerous and highly predatory offender who targeted women out enjoying time with friends or loved ones.

    "He deliberately preyed on women who were intoxicated and vulnerable, duping them into believing he was friendly before subjecting them to the most horrific sexual assaults."

    The offences occurred between 2016 and 2018.

    A mother and her three children escaped after their car caught fire in the car park of a Hull Tesco this morning.

    The Renault caught fire at about 11:00 this morning with fire crews being called to St Stephen's Shopping Centre.

    Firefighters tackled the blaze, with pictures from the scene showing thick black smoke.

    BBC reporter Amanda White, who was at the scene, said the family were "visibly shaken" following the fire.

  6. Teenagers arrested following assault on 15-year-oldpublished at 15:14 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2019

    Two teenagers have been arrested following an incident in Bradford city centre in which a 15-year-old male was assaulted.

    The males, both aged 16, were arrested on Friday and Saturday and have since been released under investigation while inquiries continue, police say.

    Another male, also 16, who was arrested earlier in connection with the incident also remains under investigation.

    The arrests follow an incident in City Park which happened at about 16:00 on Sunday 24 February.

    Police say: "Contrary to social media reports, the victim is of Asian ethnicity and following further investigation into the circumstances we can confirm the assault was not hate-motivated."

    The victim, who suffered minor injuries, and his family are being supported by officers as the investigation continues.

  7. Gordon Banks funeral: 'Off the field he was ordinary guy 'published at 14:50 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2019

    The funeral of England's World Cup-winning goalkeeper Sheffield-born Gordon Banks is currently being held.

    The service for Mr Banks, who died aged 81 on 12 February, started with a rendition of Abide with Me - a hymn synonymous with the FA Cup final.

    It was followed by a eulogy from his World Cup-winning teammate Sir Geoff Hurst.

    He said Mr Banks was "a superstar on the field, [but] off the field he was an ordinary guy with no airs or graces".

    He added: "He was a joker, a funny man. For over 50 years and every time we met during our careers or years after he would come up and joke."

  8. Man charged with four offences after A64 crashpublished at 14:16 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2019

    A man arrested following a collision on the A64 in North Yorkshire involving a police vehicle has been charged with four offences, police say.

    The man, in his 40s, was in a car which collided with a police vehicle on Saturday at about 10:00.

    Police said officers had tracked the vehicle after it was seen on the A64 in Scarborough earlier that day.

    The two cars involved were travelling in the same direction, police said.

    The man was treated for abdominal injuries before being released for questioning.

    He is due to appear in court next month., according to North Yorkshire Police.

    He's also expected to be transferred into the custody of another police force in relation to investigations in the south of England.

    Hundreds of people are gathered outside Stoke Minster this afternoon ahead of the funeral service for Sheffield-born World Cup winning goalkeeper, Gordon Banks.

    There has been a procession through Stoke-on-Trent, where the England international goalkeeper finished his playing career.

    He played in every game of the 1966 World Cup campaign, culminating in the 4-2 victory over West Germany in the final at Wembley.

    A man who was the inspiration for a very special fly-past over Sheffield last month will be a guest at tonight's Steel City derby.

    Tony Foulds shot to international fame when his story of tending a memorial to 10 US airmen who died when their bomber crashed in Sheffield in World War Two made headlines.

    The B-17 bomber came down in Endcliffe Park on 22 February 1944, killing everyone on board.

    A campaign for a fly-past started after a chance meeting between BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker and Mr Foulds, who's tended the park's memorial for several decades.

    Now, he will be in the Chairman's Lounge at Hillsborough for the meeting of Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United:

    Born in Sheffield, Banks started his career at Chesterfield, moving to Leicester in 1959 for £7,000, and it was there he established himself as England's number one, earning his first international cap in 1963 against Scotland.

    He played in every game of the 1966 World Cup campaign, culminating in the 4-2 victory over West Germany in the final at Wembley.

    In eight years at Leicester, he was runner-up in two FA Cup finals and won the League Cup in 1964, before joining Stoke in 1967.

    He stayed at the Potters until his retirement from professional football, winning the League Cup again in 1972.

    The League One strugglers have been without a manager since David Hopkin resigned on 25 February.

    The club sit second from bottom of the table, six points from safety, and have won just one of their last nine games.

    Bowyer, 47, has been out of work since August 2018, when he left Blackpool just one game into this season after two years in charge.

    He previously spent two and a half years as Blackburn manager, leaving in November 2015.

    The theft happened at the post office in Thurcroft, on Green Arbour Road, at about 07:15 on Sunday morning.

    The suspect is described as male, white, of a medium build, and was wearing a pale-coloured coat with a hood and carrying a backpack.

    Police officers are appealing for information.

    Alena's sister and mother have flown from Slovakia to the UK to make direct appeal to her to contact them, so they can know she is safe.

    The last confirmed sighting of the 38-year-old was of her leaving the Travellers Pub on Rawmarsh Hill.
