    Proposals to turn a Huddersfield high school into a primary are being criticised by parents.

    Almondbury Community School hit the headlines when a video emerged of a 15-year-old boy, a Syrian refugee, being taunted and then pulled to the ground before having water poured in his face.

    It was then rated inadequate by Ofsted in December 2018, for "ineffective" safeguarding and "variable" and "weak" teaching.

    Kirklees Council sent a letter to parents on Monday, detailing a proposal to remove the secondary element to the school as it said pupil numbers have fallen in recent years.

    Almondbury District Ward councillor Bernard McGuin said he had been contacted by about 30 parents concerned at the plans.

    The Conservative said: "I am broadly in favour but I can see why parents are angry - they have already had one reorganisation recently and now there could be another one.

    "There has been issues of racism and bullying which have not been dealt with - it has been a failure on the part of the authority."

    A warrant has been issued for the the arrest of two men who failed to appear at court earlier charged with historic sex offences against an underage girl.

    It’s part of an ongoing multi-agency investigation into historic child sex offences in Sheffield.

    Nine other men appeared at Sheffield Magistrates' Court charged with rape and sex trafficking offences.

    The arrest warrant is for Soran Karim, 43, of Greenland Drive, Sheffield and Kamaran Mahmoodi, 39, of Walkley Road, Sheffield.

  3. Police appeal over attempted robbery of woman on crutchespublished at 14:36 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March 2019

    A woman using crutches has been threatened by a man in Hull who also tried to rob her.

    Officers say the victim was getting into her car on Sibelius Road when she was approached by a man who demanded she hand over her bag.

    The woman managed to lock her car doors and drove off before he was able to steal anything during the incident which happened at about 11:45 on Saturday.

    Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to contact police.

    A woman has admitted killing a neighbour who was found dead at a house in Hull.

    Susan Atkinson, 64, (pictured) was discovered at a property in The Ryedales, in the Newland area of the city last October.

    At Grimsby Crown Court, Sherry Moore, 55, of The Rydales, denied murder but pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

    She will be sentenced on 21 May at Hull Crown Court.

    North Yorkshire has been named Holiday Destination of the Year.

    A car park in Hull city centre has closed until further notice to allow for investigations and repairs to take place.

    The temporary closure of the Pryme Street car park was today confirmed by Hull City Council, which says customers will be notified once it reopens.

    The city council says there are a further four long stay car parks available in the city centre at George Street, Osborne Street, Francis Street and Trippett Street.

    A York man has been charged after an attack on an emergency worker in the city.

    The man was arrested on Friday following an incident involving a Police Community Support Officer whose nose was broken during an assault.

    The man has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and assault by beating.

    The man is due to appear at York Crown Court in April.

    A portrait of Sir Thomas More, described as a masterpiece, is set to come to an art gallery in Hull next week.

    The drawing of the man, who was executed for refusing to recognise Henry VIII's supremacy over the Church, will be on display in the Ferens Art Gallery from Saturday.

    The piece, which is almost 500 years old, is the work of Hans Holbein the Younger who became the most important artist at the court of Henry VIII, during which time the monarch twice visited Hull.

    Hull City Council says the "masterpiece" from the Royal Collection will be on display in the city until Sunday 23 June.

    A road-sweeping vehicle has been involved in two collisions in one day, police say.

    The incidents happened on 8 March in the Skipton area of North Yorkshire.

    At 11:34 officers were called to a collision involving a red Volkswagen Lupo and the road-sweeper on the B6480 at High Bentham.

    The woman driver of the Lupo was taken to Airedale Hospital with a suspected rib fracture.

    Police say emergency services were dealing with the injured driver of the Lupo when the road-sweeper left the scene.

    Later the same day it crashed on the A65 at Austwick, causing serious injury to the driver, including a fractured ankle, a broken rib and fractured vertebrae.

    The driver of the road-sweeper provided a positive roadside breath specimen and is currently under investigation on suspicion of drink driving.

    Police are appealing for anyone who saw either incident, or who may have dash-cam footage to contact them.

    The midfielder has been called up to the squad for the first time for their opening Euro 2020 qualifier against Slovakia later this month.

    He will be part of Ryan Giggs' side available to face Trinidad and Tobago in a friendly on 20 March.

    A pair of school children were allegedly robbed and assaulted while walking home from school in East Yorkshire.

    The two boys were approached from behind by a man in Cottingham who demanded money and a mobile phone.

    One of the boys, 14, refused and was hit in the face during the incident at about 15:30 on Monday 25 January.

    The other, aged 12, was robbed of an amount of money by the suspect, who fled the scene on Inglemire Lane in the town.

    The man, who was wearing a dark grey hooded top and a white bandana over the bottom half of his face, ran off in the direction of Lytham Close.

    The Audi A3 destroyed a road sign and hit the shop on Knollbeck Lane, Brampton, at about 21:00.

    The car was "requested to stop" by police officers shortly before the crash, South Yorkshire Police said.

    A number of men were treated at the scene by ambulance crews, according to police.

    Police officers in South Yorkshire are asking drivers to only drive on the A628 if "absolutely necessary" after a lorry crashed onto its side.

    South Yorkshire Police Operational Support says there is black ice and low visibility on the route, which links Barnsley and Manchester.

  18. Attempted kidnap of young girls in North Yorkshirepublished at 11:04 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March 2019

    Two men have been arrested on suspicion of attempted kidnap.

    It comes after three girls were approached by two men driving a silver van, North Yorkshire Police say.

    It happened at about 17:00 yesterday evening on Half Crown Way (pictured), in Knaresborough.

    Officers say the girls, aged between 10 and 12-years-old, were left shaken, but weren't hurt during the incident and managed to leave the scene and get help from a local resident who contacted police.

    Det Sgt Paul Schofield, said: “I would like to praise the girls for their quick thinking, which not only got them away from the scene, but also provided officers with information vital to this investigation.

    “I would also like to thank the local residents who came to the aid of the girls following the incident and contacted police.”

    A 19-year-old man and a 46-year-old man were arrested a short time later in Bradford.

    They remain in police custody.

    A teenage Bradford boxer, who wears a hijab, is aiming to break stereotypes in the sport.

    Safiyyah Syeed, 18, plans to have her first official amateur fight later this year.

    She says the sport has changed her life: "Honestly, I could have the worst day in the world but when I walk through them doors, I just forget."
