    Sheffield rock band Bring Me The Horizon have been named as one of the acts to play at BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend.

    The band, led by front man Oli Sykes, started in the Steel City in 2004 and recently had their first UK number one album.

    This morning it was confirmed the five-some will play at the Big Weekend in Middlesbrough, alongside Miley Cyrus, Stormzy and Rita Ora.

    A 36-year-old man has died after being hit by a car on the M1 slip road near Leeds last month.

    Emergency services were called to the slip road at junction 44 of the M1 at about 11:30 on 28 February.

    A pedestrian had been involved in a collision with a white Volvo S80, police say.

    The man was taken to hospital but has now died.

    West Yorkshire Police is appealing for witnesses.

    The Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire, has announced she will not stand for re-election in May next year.

    Ms Mulligan said: "This has been a very difficult time for me. I am passionate about public service, and in recent months have explained some of my reasons why.

    "But, in seven years of being the elected Commissioner, I have taken tough decisions which I firmly believe are the right ones, but which others clearly disagree with.

    “I am proud to have been the first Police and Crime Commissioner, and now the first Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, for North Yorkshire."

    Ms Mulligan failed to be be automatically selected as the Conservative Party's candidate for the 2020 election at a meeting last month.

    A panel ruled Ms Mulligan displayed "bullying behaviour" towards members of staff in October 2018.

    A boiler suit-wearing man, who robbed staff at a jewellers in Northallerton earlier, is being hunted by police.

    The man is said to have stolen a large amount of jewellery from Bradley's in Barkers Arcade at about 10:00 this morning.

    The suspect is thought to have been wearing a boiler suit and crash helmet and made his escape on a bicycle near Applegarth Primary School.

    The fire service in West Yorkshire plans to spend nearly £8m of its cash reserves on three new fire stations.

    A financial report by West Yorkshire Fire Authority reveals new stations are proposed for Keighley, Halifax and Huddersfield.

    The authority's earmarked £2.2m for the Keighley station, £2.5m for Halifax and £3m for Huddersfield.

    The Local Democracy Reporting Service says the plans detail a new fire station in Keighley in the 2020/21 financial year, followed by a £2.5m fire station in Halifax in 2021/22 and a £3m new fire station in Huddersfield in 2022/23.

    A scheme at one of the biggest women's open prisons in England is teaching inmates horticultural skills, which it's hoped will stop them reoffending when released.

    Tucked away in the North Yorkshire village of Askham Richard is The Grange garden centre.

    Run by Askham Grange prison, many of the women who work there are inmates.

    The centre is said to play a key role in rehabilitation, helping the women learn skills and earn qualifications which aim to help them avoid reoffending when their sentences come to an end.

    Five new free schools are due to open in Yorkshire and the Humber as part of the government's plans for more school places for children with special educational needs.

    It will mean that there will be more than 500 extra places for children who find mainstream education challenging, the government has said.

    The schools will be in North Yorkshire, Leeds, Sheffield, Kingston upon Hull and North Lincolnshire.

    A total of 39 new free schools are planned across the country providing 3,500 places.

    The Department for Education says the schools will provide specialist support and education for pupils with complex needs such as autism, severe learning difficulties or mental health conditions.

    It will also benefit those who may have been or are at risk of being excluded from mainstream schools.

    The schools are established as academies, independent of local authorities.

    Unlike local-authority-run schools, they are exempt from teaching the national curriculum, external.

    Three people have been released under investigation following a serious assault in Rotherham at the weekend.

    Detectives are appealing for witnesses after the attack on Saturday, which has left a man with life-threatening injuries.

    Officers were called to Bridgegate at about 16:30, after reports of a fight between a group of men outside The County pub, near to the Rotherham Interchange.

    A 38-year-old man was airlifted to hospital.

    He's described as being in a "critical condition."

    Police say five people were arrested at the scene on suspicion of GBH with intent and public order offences.

    Three have been released under investigation.

    Det Ch Insp Simon Palmer said: “We are still establishing the circumstances around this incident.

    "There is some speculation online this is linked to local football related rivalries, however at this time we do not believe this to be the case."

    Young people in Bradford are flocking to new restaurants which specialise in desserts.

    The restaurants, which feature luxurious ice creams as well as mocktails, are part of a trend to head out and meet-up with friends over a sweet treat.

    Social media in the city also plays a part with the dishes creating hype on Instagram and other platforms.

    There are calls for more Yorkshire kidney donors to help cut waiting lists across the region.

    NHS Blood and Transplant say it's on the lookout for more people to join its sharing scheme, external, where people donate a kidney anonymously.

    In Yorkshire 63 people received a transplant from a stranger last year.

    Kath Tann, a kidney donor from Huddersfield, signed up after her husband became sick.

    She says: "I really hope someone is walking around with my kidney and they now have their life back, because dialysis and kidney failure doesn't just affect the person going through it.

    "It has a huge impact on the whole family."

    A West Yorkshire food producer says it has a 30-year plan to protect the environment by becoming carbon neutral by 2050.

    Leeds-based Arla Foods, Europe's largest milk producer, is pledging to make its operations carbon-neutral from cow to supermarket, including more than 2,000 farms in the UK.

    The company says today's announcement will see any unavoidable emissions being offset by changes in the supply chain.

    "It's an ambitious target, but if everyone works together then it's possible," said Arla member, Kari Dunford.

    The theft of nearly 10,000 sheep across England and Wales last year has only resulted in one charge by police, the BBC can reveal.

    A Freedom of Information request showed 9,635 sheep were stolen in 2018, up from 7,606 in 2017 and 6,337 in 2016.

    Humberside saw the biggest jump in the number of sheep theft incidents in 2018, while Dorset and North Yorkshire had the joint second highest.

    All 43 police forces across England and Wales responded to the BBC, giving details of 381 incidents of sheep theft last year.

    Hertfordshire Police was the only force to bring a charge.

    Tributes have been paid to the man responsible for bringing the World Snooker Championship's to Yorkshire.

    Mike Watterson died at the weekend, aged 76, following a short illness.

    Mr Watterson, a former professional snooker player, is credited with bringing the championship to Sheffield's Crucible

    World Snooker say: "In 1977, his wife Carole went to see a play at the Crucible in Sheffield, which turned out to be a vital moment in snooker history.

    "She came home to tell her husband it could make an ideal venue for a snooker event.

    "When he visited the theatre he agreed, and the World Championship was staged there for the first time that year."

    The venue is now recognised around the world as the home of snooker’s biggest tournament.

    Mr Watterson also created the World Darts Championship and promoted events in cricket and bowls.
