  2. Storm Gareth: Branch smashes into car in Sheffieldpublished at 08:43 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2019

    A large branch has landed on top of a parked car in Sheffield as Storm Gareth continues to bring high winds to the area.

    It happened on Knowle Lane, Bents Green, blocking part of the road and landing on top of a Range Rover.

    Katey Dent, who sent this photo to the BBC, says traffic is struggling to get past at the moment.

  3. Police hunt for tattooed man after 'frightening' robberypublished at 08:21 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2019

    CCTV images of a man police want to trace after a robbery at a newsagents in West Yorkshire have been released.

    The robbery happened at about 14:30 on Sunday 10 February at a convenience store on Pellon Lane in Halifax.

    Officers say the suspect, armed with a knife, entered the premise and demanded the shop worker, a woman in her 20s, hand over money.

    The suspect then made off on foot with a quantity of cash.

    He is described as white, in his mid to late 20s, of slim build and heavily tattooed on his hands and neck, with a mark/tattoo on his left cheek.

    Det Sgt Ross Wadsworth said: "This was an extremely frightening incident for the woman involved and thankfully she wasn't injured.

    "I would appeal for anyone who recognises the man pictured to contact police.

    "The male pictured has quite distinctive tattoos on his hands and neck and I hope by releasing these images someone may recognise him and come forward with information."

    A police community support officer said an eight-year-old girl threatened to stab him "in the heart" when he was called to a school in North Yorkshire.

    Officers were called to the school in the Harrogate district after the girl produced a kitchen knife in class.

    North Yorkshire Police said the classroom was evacuated when the girl threatened officers and staff.

    A force spokesperson added no-one was injured and the girl was "now receiving appropriate support".

    PCSO Matt Murphy, who was called to the school last month, tweeted an image of the weapon, which he said had a 5in (12cm) long blade.

    There's new money coming to Yorkshire police forces to help tackle knife crime.

    The Treasury says the £100m of extra national funding for police, announced by Chancellor Philip Hammond, will mainly go to the seven police forces where serious violence is highest and where 70% of knife crime takes place.

    South and West Yorkshire will benefit from the money, which will be used to ease policing pressures, pay for forces to have more officers available and to fund Violence Reduction Units, similar to the model in Glasgow.
