Naveed Akhtar (right) hid a parcel containing drugs and miniature mobile phones in a courtroom toilet at Bradford Crown Court for fellow defendant Fahim Iqbal (left) to pick up and take to HMP Leeds.

The court heard a dock officer became suspicious and found the package in a toilet roll dispenser and drugs were found under a chair in the dock on 4 February.

Iqbal, 28, of no fixed abode, and Akhtar, 44, of Newport Place, Bradford, were both sentenced to a further five months in prison.

The original trial surrounded sexual offences against two teenage girls where Iqbal was sentenced to seven years for aiding and abetting rape.

Akhtar was convicted of two counts of rape and sent to prison for 17 years, with seven other men also jailed after a six-week trial.

The drugs found held a very low street value, but would have held a higher value in prison due to demand.

Sentencing the paire Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC said they had executed the plan "with remarkable stupidity and quite possibly some degree of pressure, under the noses of dock officers and myself".

The plans submitted today also include the removal of a road bridge and the reorganisation of the road layout leading into the station.

The planning application has been submitted following a public consultation in 2018 which saw over 1,500 people share their feedback on the scheme.

When the station opened in 1877 it was the largest in the world.

Councillor Peter Dew said: "Throughout the station's lifetime it has seen several major upgrades, and this new masterplan is long overdue."

Eytan Alexander, from UKAT, said: "Prevention should be the priority in tackling the rise of drink and drug misuse among children in order to avoid the beast which is addiction developing in later life.

"It is imperative that parents living across Yorkshire address the topic of drugs and alcohol early on with their children."
