The local authority says work still needs to be done to help smokers who want to quit and an existing contract, currently provided by an NHS trust, comes to an end later this year.

Rather than renewing that, the council says it wants to expand the work done to provide increased support to help the people who need it the most.

A Hull MP says it's "extremely disappointing" women will continue to be offered a type of surgery which has left hundreds in agony.

    Mesh

There has been a temporary ban on using mesh implants, which were widely used to help women who suffered problems after childbirth.

Some women have been left unable to walk, work or have sex after having the implants, which are used to treat pelvic organ prolapse and incontinence.

But new guidelines suggest as long as women are warned of the possible side effects, the mesh can be used.

Hull West and Hessle MP Emma Hardy, says she will be asking NICE to look at its guidelines again.

The Labour MP says: "After all the evidence, all the testimonies from so many women about the damage and the harm vaginal mesh can cause, they're now saying that it's safe and yet all the evidence says that is absolutely not the case."

NICE said the "limited evidence" meant "the true prevalence of long-term complications following surgery with mesh is unknown".
