  4. Cottingham refugee bike safety scheme startspublished at 10:48 British Summer Time 11 April 2019

A group of refugees in East Yorkshire who've escaped the Syrian civil war have been given reconditioned bicycles to help them get around and increase their chances of employment.

    Bike scheme participants

A total of 30 refugees have been given the bikes and safety gear at a cycle training day in Cottingham.

It's hoped the bikes will help the refugees integrate into the community and participants are to be given safe cycling lessons.

One of the refugees, Muhammed Al Karawit, said it was a "great project".

"It will help us to go to college and do shopping as well, we are really grateful for this," he said, through an interpreter.

Mr Al Karawit said his family had escaped from the Syrian city of Daraa via Lebanon to the UK.

The course will lead to a bike ride around Beverley in June.

As well as bicycle training and road safety, participants are also to be taught about getting a driving licence, insurance, MOTs and road tax.

The project was launched last year when 40 refugees were put through the course and has since won an award for sustainable travel.

The training took place at R-evolution, a Cottingham-based charity.

Mark Jones, 24, along with his partner, Alice Cutter, 22, are accused of being members of National Action after it was outlawed in December 2016.

Mr Jones told Birmingham Crown Court Adolf Hitler was a "prominent figure" in his ideology.

The special edition book was given to Nazi party members as a wedding gift.

Mr Jones and Ms Cutter, both of Mulhalls Mill, Sowerby Bridge, near Halifax, are standing trial alongside Garry Jack, 23, from Heathland Avenue, Birmingham, and 18-year-old Connor Scothern, of Bagnall Avenue, Nottingham, who deny the same charge.

The jury was previously told Ms Cutter had entered a "Miss Hitler" beauty contest under the name "Buchenwald Princess" - a reference to a Nazi-era death camp at which tens of thousands of people were killed or starved.

An image of Mr Jones giving a Nazi salute in the camp's execution room was widely shared on social media, the court heard earlier.

  18. Yorkshire ambulance crews fined for driving in bus lanespublished at 06:52 British Summer Time 11 April 2019

Ambulance crews in Bradford and York are being fined for driving in bus lanes and banned from public transport lanes when not attending a 999 call, according to their union.

    An ambulanceImage source, Getty Images

Unison revealed that many ambulance drivers have received penalties in those two cities for using the lanes to avoid traffic and speed up journeys for patients needing vital care.

The union warned that patients could end up stuck in traffic congestion if the fines continue.

Richard Bentley, from Unison's Yorkshire Ambulance Service Branch, said paramedics can use bus lanes in Leeds but not in other cities.

He said: "If I leave Leeds and head to Bradford or York, I'm subject to a £60 fine.

"Several colleagues have fallen foul of this and there's nothing we can do."

Some councils have dropped fines following appeals, but drivers' time is wasted on paperwork, said Unison.

National ambulance officer Colm Porter said: "Crews need to get patients to hospital quickly, but not every call requires lights and sirens."
