Teachers at a school in Sheffield have called off any further industrial action against the proposed closure of a school's sixth form.

    Teachers at the school

They originally went on strike after Bradfield School in Worrall announced it would be closing its sixth form, meaning fewer teachers would be required.

The school said the move was because recruitment had been low for several years, putting seven teachers' jobs under threat.

The school's sixth form is still set to close, but the threatened staff will now be accommodated through voluntary redundancy and reallocation within the school, the National Education Union has said.

  14. Dam! Beavers are focus of Yorkshire anti-flooding trialpublished at 07:55 British Summer Time 18 April 2019

Two beavers have been released into a North Yorkshire forest to build dams which it's hoped could help slow the flow of flood water in the area.

    A beaver

The Eurasian beavers are slowly being reintroduced in England after becoming extinct 400 years ago.

The five-year Forestry England project will check if the creatures maintain dams and boost biodiversity.

It's hoped the pair will breed on a wetland site in Pickering and become an effective way of protecting towns and villages from flood water.

Forestry England's Alan Eves said: "We are looking forward to seeing the beavers settle into their new home and are very interested to watch how they impact on the water flow and surrounding ecology."

The week-long course is taking place away from public roads on the site of the former Driffield airfield and is designed to get youngsters into safe habits before they ditch the "L" plates.

The programme began in the south of England but has now come to East Yorkshire, with parents providing the cars and children driving around cones.

Course leader Ian Goring said: "Getting students to understand what safe driving's all about and giving them a chance to practice before they're 17 means they can concentrate more on the road rather than the mechanics inside the car."

  18. Homes sold under market value to HS2, campaigners claimpublished at 06:52 British Summer Time 18 April 2019

People in the path of the proposed HS2 rail link say they've had to sell their homes under market value, as new figures from the BBC show 900 residential properties have been bought for a total of about £600m.

    The Shimmer EstateImage source, PA

Campaigners opposed to HS2 said some homeowners had been treated badly, claiming homes were routinely undervalued.

Tracy Stone, from Mexborough, lives on the Shimmer Estate (pictured), which made headlines when the route was announced because it was so newly-built residents had only just moved in when they learned their homes were at risk of demolition to make way for HS2.

She recently sold her house to HS2 at £5,000 below what she thought was market value after being told the proposed route would go directly through the estate.

"They've been offering ridiculously low prices and the whole process just feels very unfair", she said.

"We were promised by the government and HS2 that they would look after people on this estate, but that hasn't happened. We've been let down and lied to."

A spokeswoman for HS2 said: "We are committed to supporting homeowners on the Shimmer Estate, and have reached agreement on values for over 75% of cases where the homeowner has applied to sell their property through our property support schemes.

"Every home is unique and there will often be different opinions about the value of a property. We have a responsibility to establish a price that is fair both for homeowners and the taxpayer."

    David OluwaleImage source, Jules Lister

David Oluwale was last seen fleeing two police officers on 18 April 1969 and later found drowned in the River Aire.

His death led to the first prosecution of British police for involvement in the death of a black person.

Max Farrar, from the David Oluwale Memorial Association, said his tragic story had helped change the city.

Among the events, external is a gathering on Thursday at Killingbeck Cemetery, where Mr Oluwale is buried alongside nine other people in a pauper's grave.

An exhibition by artist Rasheed Araeen is being held at The Tetley gallery in Leeds, while other events through April include poetry readings, music performances and a walk round Leeds of places associated with Mr Oluwale's life.
