Bradley Aspin, 21, was attacked by Jermaine Allen, 30, who had travelled from Bradford in West Yorkshire for a night out in Newcastle.
Mr Aspin, who's from the Cleveland area, was knocked unconscious in the fall and had to wear a brace for five months.
It had "massively, massively" changed his life, he said.
"I am always looking over my shoulder and I don't go out drinking as much as I did because I don't want that to happen again."
The pair had got into an argument in the House of Smith bar in September 2017. Mr Aspin was taken to hospital while Allen carried on with his night out.
When police arrived Allen lashed out and managed to escape. Officers eventually managed to trace him back to Brindle Close, Bradford, in January this year.

Organisers of a manufacturing career skills event have announced it's aiming to reach 6,000 students in Bradford.
Bradford Manufacturing Weeks, which will be held from 7–18 October, educates young people about career opportunities in the manufacturing sector.
The event, which is led by West and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, reached 3,000 young people with its first campaign last year.
Nick Garthwaite, president of the Bradford Chamber, said the event aims to create 1,000 tours of businesses, 600 work experiences, 200 panel participants and 4,000 activities in schools.
He said: “These partnerships are the very best ways of getting young people to see for themselves the exciting and progressive career opportunities our district presents in the most diverse, local businesses.”
“This initiative is also about raising awareness of apprenticeships and by improving communication between schools and manufacturers and showing just what an innovative industry this is.”

Read MoreA new Viking-themed bar and restaurant where customers will be able to throw axes has applied for a licence to open in York, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
Visitors to the venue would be able to throw axes at targets, an attraction which the co-owner describes as "like dangerous bowling".
The 80-seat restaurant, called The Hilt, would have six axe-throwing bays for customers over 16 years of age to "hone their Viking skills".
There would be an alcohol limit for customers throwing axes in the area at the back of the venue, described as similar to an archery range, which would be supervised by instructors.
Axe-throwing is said to be popular in Canada and America - as shown by these photographs taken at Stumpys House, a similar venue in Eatontown, New Jersey.
Co-owner Alex Cronin, said he was "trying to shift the idea away from bars in York that are just there for people to get drunk" and hopes to start an axe-throwing league in the city.
A application has been submitted to open the restaurant, which would create 20 jobs, and serve cocktails and hot dogs, in an empty unit next door to Savers on Goodramgate.

The ringing is also intended to "express our confidence that its bells will one day ring out over Paris and a fully restored cathedral".
BBC Radio Sheffield's Andy Kershaw was there to hear the bells being rung:
