    Of the remaining seven seats five went to the Liberal Party and two to the Liberal Democrats.

    After boundary changes saw the number of council seats drop to 24, the The Tories were only able to secure 10, while a further 10 went to independents, three went to the Liberal Democrats and one was taken by the Green Party.

    A woman has been jailed for eight years after she strangled her partner to death.

    Sheila Lockridge (pictured above), 66, attacked her partner of 30 years, Dianne Williamson, 70, at Lodge Gardens in Gristhorpe, near Filey, on 2 September.

    The court heard after strangling Ms Williamson she rang police to say: "I strangled her, she's dead".

    Lockridge, of Lodge Gardens, Gristhorpe, denied murder but admitted manslaughter by diminished responsibility.

    Det Ch Insp Mark Pearson said: "This was a brutal and tragic end to a 30-year relationship in which Dianne Williamson suffered at the hands of Lockridge.

    "My thoughts are with Dianne Williamson’s family at this very difficult time.

    "No sentence could ever compensate for the loss of their mother and grandmother."

    Police in West Tanfield appear to have found Where's Wally at this year's Tour de Yorkshire.

    Officers were pictured alongside a man, wearing thick black-rimmed glasses and a red and white bobble hat, just like the character from the series of children's books.

    Sgt Paul Cording shared the picture on Twitter and said: "It appears our colleagues policing the Tour de Yorkshire have found him."

    The Tories secured 16 of the 31 seats on the council, Labour took eight, the Yorkshire Party took four and the remaining three went to independent candidates.

    Turnout in the election was 31%.

    Team Drops cyclist Abby-Mae Parkinson has been wished good luck by Bradford Grammar School, where she was once a pupil.

    The school shared a picture of the former student, who took part in the women's Tour de Yorkshire race this morning.

    On Twitter, the school said "this time last year Abby was inspiring her old classmates" as part of a recycling initiative.

    A man has appeared in court charged with attempted murder in relation to an incident at a block of flats which left a 47-year-old man with head and pelvic injuries.

    The incident happened on the third floor of a block of flats in Fourth Avenue, York, at about 18.40 on Wednesday.

    A 52-year-old man appeared at York Magistrates' Court earlier charged with attempted murder, wounding with intent and false imprisonment.

    He has been remanded in custody to appear at Leeds Crown Court on 24 May.

    A number of cylinders of nitrous oxide have been stolen from a hospital in East Yorkshire.

    Humberisde Police said several 40kg cylinders were taken during a burglary at Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham in the early hours of 30 April.

    The force has appealed for information relating to the break-in and warned the gas, more commonly known as laughing gas, could be dangerous if used incorrectly.

    The Mayor of the Sheffield City Region Dan Jarvis has been speaking in Barnsley just before the men's race started this afternoon.

    Labour MP for Barnsley Central said the event was a "big bonus" for the town, bringing "prestige and profile" along with thousands of visitors.

    He said: "You can see by the number of people here today, there's a huge amount of enthusiasm for it, people are really excited about the fact it's back here in Barnsley this year.

    "It's a great event and I'm a big supporter of it."

    Catering staff at an NHS trust are set to receive a pay rise following two days of industrial action.

    Unison the union said the workers at Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS Foundation Trust would receive a nationally-agreed pay rise for NHS staff.

    Their jobs were transferred to private firm Sodexo in 2017, which confirmed it had reached agreement with the trust on new pay rates.

    Sue Cookman, from Unison, said the workers were "jubilant".

    The Labour Party has kept control of Sheffield Council after winning 13 of the 28 seats available in Thursday's local elections - three fewer than they won the last time seats were up for election in 2016.

    The Sheffield result reflects the national picture as the Liberal Democrats have made gains winning 11 seats, the Green Party won four seats and UKIP didn't win any.

    Nationally, the Conservatives have lost over 500 councillors, while Labour have also seen dozens of losses and both the Lib Dems and Greens have made gains.

    Including the seats not up for election this year, the council is made up as a whole of 49 Labour councillors, 26 Lib Dem councillors, eight Green councillors and one UKIP councillor.
