1. Tour de Yorkshire day two: Bedale to Barnsleypublished at 13:38 British Summer Time 3 May 2019

    There's just over an hour to go until the Stage Two of the men's Tour de Yorkshire cycle race gets under way.

    During the four-day tour, the world's top cyclists are passing through 150 cities towns and villages in Yorkshire.

    Day two sees riders set out on an 82-mile route, heading to Barnsley, taking in Pontefract, Garforth and Harrogate on the way.

    The women's two-day race began in Barnsley just after 09:00 this morning.

    First to cross the finish line in Bedale was Dutch cyclist Lorena Wiebes.

    The first results are coming through in York and North Yorkshire's local elections.

    The first ward to declare was Tanfield, where David Anthony Webster of the Conservative Party was elected with 600 votes.

    In Ryedale, Steve Mason has taken the Amotherby ward for the Liberal democrats from the Conservatives.

    Councillor Mason is a member of Frack Free United and his ward includes Kirby Misperton, where Third Energy plans to frack.

    In Selby, Labour has held its three seats in the Selby East ward, while the Conservatives have held Thorpe Willoughby, Cawood and Wistow.

    Meanwhile City of York Council says turnout at the local elections is provisionally at just over 40%, which is higher than previous votes.

    Other counts in North Yorkshire are due to declare through the afternoon.

  5. Tour de Yorkshire: Wiebes is Stage One women's race winnerpublished at 13:01 British Summer Time 3 May 2019

    Stage One of the women's Tour de Yorkshire race has been won by Dutch cyclist Lorena Wiebes.

    Both stages of the race are exactly the same as the men's, with 264km of racing and 3,200m of cumulative climbing.

    Today, the riders started in Barnsley and finished 82 miles (132km) later in Bedale.

    Tomorrow they will race from Bridlington to Scarborough.

    A "drunk thug" has been jailed after he headbutted a heavily-pregnant woman in front of her son.

    Mark Whitehead, 50, from Maple Road in Mexborough, attacked the victim at Doncaster station on 23 April after she asked him to stop swearing.

    Doncaster Magistrates' Court heard Whitehead headbutted the woman and then headbutted the window of a nearby coffee shop

    Whitehead was been jailed for ten weeks, ordered to pay £300 to the victim and £600 to replace the window.

    PC Matthew Kania said: “Understandably, the victim was incredibly shocked by the attack and feared for both the safety of her young son and her unborn baby. "I hope the prison time and the fine serve as a constant reminder of Whitehead's reckless and dangerous behaviour."

    Roads in Harrogate, which were closed for the women's race, have now reopened but only until this afternoon.

    So if you need to nip through quickly. The men's race is scheduled to go off at around 14:45 BST so should sweep through Harrogate around 16:30.

    Students in Bedale have put together this piece of land art to raise money for Help for Heroes, the Tour de Yorkshire's official charity.

    A man has been charged with attempted murder in relation to an incident at a block of flats which left a 47-year-old man with head and pelvic injuries.

    The incident happened on the third floor of a block of flats in Fourth Avenue, York, at about 18.40 on Wednesday.

    North Yorkshire Police said a 52-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder, wounding with intent and false imprisonment.

    He is due to appear before magistrates later today.

    A former World War One munitions factory in West Yorkshire could be converted into a day spa if new plans are approved.

    Weapons were once developed at Baildon Green Mills, in Baildon, although more recently it's been used as a collection of commercial units.

    A planning application submitted to Bradford Council would see one floor of the mill converted from warehouse space into a spa.

    A decision on the proposed development, in the Baildon Green Conservation Area, is expected next month.

    The union Unison says it's reached an agreement with Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS trust in a dispute over pay involving catering staff.

    About 70 staff had started strike action, saying their employer Sodexo refused to match NHS pay rates after they were transferred over.

    Their jobs were transferred to private company Sodexo in January 2017.

    Strikes took place on 1 May. Further action was planned for today and later in the month.

    Unison's Sue Cookman says: "We heard last night Sodexo said, "OK,we'll pay you."

    "We're going to talk to them later today to finalise the details, but the workers here are jubilant."
