    A huge gas holder in York is set to be demolished later this year.

    Developers Moda and North Star are planning to build 704 homes on the derelict former gas works site in Heworth Green.

    The planning application for the development says it represents a “unique opportunity by which an unused, contaminated, large unsightly piece of land, close to the city centre, can be brought back into use”.

    A planning application has been submitted for the removal of the structure with demolition work due to start on October 1.

    Almost £3m is to be spent on trying to keep youngsters away from criminal gangs in Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham .

    The project is being launched with a £703,000 grant secured from the government by the county’s Police and Crime Commissioner Dr Alan Billings.

    Each of the three local councils are matching that figure from their own existing resources, to create a scheme designed to step in and help children and young people at risk of getting drawn into criminal gangs.

    Funding will last until March 2020, according to a report about the project.

    A fan who assaulted two stewards at a football match has been sentenced to 23 weeks in a young offenders institution.

    Ewan Corbett, 20, punched one steward and pushed another one over at a match between Blackburn Rovers and Middlesbrough in February, police said.

    Security staff were attempting to remove a supporter from Ewood Park's away end when Corbett attacked them.

    He pleaded guilty to two counts of assault at Preston Magistrates Court on 17 June.

    Corbett, of Albermarie Drive, Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire, was also given an eight-year football banning order.

    Families of some of those who died in the Hillsborough disaster have spoken of their "relief" that the match commander, David Duckenfield, will face a retrial.

    Earlier, a judge ruled that the former chief superintendent, now 74, should go on trial again for the gross negligence manslaughter of 95 Liverpool fans after a jury failed to reach a verdict in April.

    Irene McGlone, whose husband Alan died in the crush (pictured above), said she was both relieved and "over the moon" at the news.

    "I didn't sleep at all last night. I didn't think we'd get that result.”

    Her daughter Amy was just five years old when her dad Alan died at Hillsborough. She said a retrial was the right decision.

    "We haven’t even be able to have any closure, so still this many years later our lives are still on hold.

    "And not only do we suffer as a family, but survivors are still suffering. And even like the next generation of our children, they’re still suffering because we can’t tell them that we’ve got an outcome yet."

    The 26-year-old forward arrives at the New York Stadium from Plymouth Argyle for an undisclosed-fee.

    Ladapo scored 18 goals for the Pilgrims last season as they were relegated from League One last season.

    It is understood Rotherham have paid £500,000 for the former Crystal Palace player.

    A driver who uploaded footage to her Facebook page of a boy "dancing" in her car has been banned from the road.

    Kerry White, 35, was driving when she made the mobile phone recording.

    The clip, captioned "He got the moves", was reported to police, who located White's vehicle and retrieved the footage from her mobile.

    White, from Scarborough, admitted dangerous driving and was also given a suspended jail term at York Crown Court.

    Relatives of those who died in the Hillsborough disaster have been giving their reaction to a judge's decision to order a retrial of match commander David Duckenfield.

    The former chief superintendent, who’s 74, is charged with the gross negligence manslaughter of 95 Liverpool fans who were killed in a crush in Sheffield in 1989.

    After a jury failed to reach a verdict in April, judge Peter Openshaw upheld an application by prosecutors for a retrial, which is expected to begin on 7 October.

    Speaking from the Cunard building in Liverpool, John Traynor, the brother of Christopher and Kevin Traynor who both died in the disaster said he's "delighted” at the ruling.

    “It's what we've been waiting for. Now we can plan our lives again now we know it's the 7 October."

    Two men have been arrested on suspicion of assault after a man suffered serious head injuries during an assault in Sheffield city centre.

    The 41-year-old man was taken to hospital after he was found unconscious on Arundel Gate at about 22:00 on Sunday.

    South Yorkshire Police said the man is in a critical condition.

    The force said two men from Sheffield, aged 20 and 26, have arrested on suspicion of assault.

    In April, a jury failed to reach a verdict on the former chief superintendent who denied a charge of gross negligence manslaughter.

    Lawyers acting for Mr Duckenfield, 74, of Ferndown, Dorset had opposed an application for a retrial.

    The trial is fixed to start on 7 October at Preston Crown Court.

    A rare breed of bat has been discovered living in South Yorkshire.

    The female Brandt's bat has been found close to Broomhead Reservoir, near Stocksbridge.

    Robert Bell, vice chairman of the South Yorkshire Bat Group, says the discovery of the bat is significant.

    "The Brandt's bat is small and cryptic, quite hard to identify. For that reason, we don't know much about the numbers of them in the county," says Mr Bell.

    "We went looking for them, but only found males and thought maybe there were no females in the area."

    The discovery means "we're re-evaluating everything we think about the species", Mr Bell adds.

    "Maybe there are going to be other female Brandt's bats to find. But right now, this is the only place we've found them."

    A Leeds woman who went missing on Monday has been found, according to police.

    Kelly Hargreaves was reported missing yesterday morning.

    The 32-year-old has been found "safe and well", police say.

    The West Yorkshire force has thanked people for sharing the appeal over her disappearance.

    A teenager from Hull has been charged with possession with intent to supply heroin and cocaine.

    The boy, who cannot be named because of his age, was arrested in the north of Hull after being seen engaging in suspected drugs activity on 21 June, according to police.

    The boy has appeared at court and been bailed with conditions which include a nightly curfew.

    He’ll also have to report to a police station in Hull every day, police say.

    He's wanted by police in South Yorkshire in connection with a serious assault in Doncaster.

    It happened at about 03:00 on Monday 13 May when a 45-year-old man was assaulted in a pub on Silver Street.

    The victim was standing at the bar talking when a man unknown to him approached him and punched him in the face. police say.

    He was taken to hospital and treated for facial injuries.

    Police believe the man pictured could be able to help them with their inquiries.

    Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to contact the South Yorkshire force.

  19. Redruth woman, 60, killed in Cornwall two-car crashpublished at 08:53 British Summer Time 25 June 2019

    A woman who died in a two-car crash near Chiverton Cross in Cornwall was a 60-year-old from Redruth, police say.

    The collision happened on the B3277 near Chiverton Cross in Cornwall at about 13:30 on Monday.

    The woman, who was driving a Vauxhall Astra, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her next of kin have been informed.

    The driver of the other vehicle, a 59-year-old man from Doncaster in a Mazda MX5, sustained serious leg injury and is being treated in hospital in Plymouth. His passenger, a 50-year-old local man, was treated at the Royal Cornwall Hospital near Truro for minor injuries.

    Officers closed the road between Sevenmilestone and Chiverton Cross for seven hours for an investigation.

    Police have appealed for witnesses, external.
