    The winning entry will be displayed on the front of the appliance based at Rastrick Fire Station, near Halifax, for a year.

  2. Flamingo Land sends rhinos to Rwandapublished at 08:09 British Summer Time 25 June 2019

    Five endangered rhinos from European zoos, including Flamingo Land in North Yorkshire, have been flown to Rwanda to be released into the wild.

    The largest transportation of rhinos from Europe to Africa culminated on Monday, as five zoo-born eastern black rhinos were released in the Akagera National Park.

    The three females and two male rhinos, aged between two and nine years, came from Flamingo Land, the Czech Republic's Dvur Kralove safari park and Ree Park Safari in Denmark.

    The animals will remain in a large, temporary enclosure in the 1,000 sq km park, until vets are happy they've settled and are ready for life in the wild.

    The number of cyber-related sex crimes involving children has more than doubled in Yorkshire and the Humber region over the past four years.

    Figures from the NSPCC show almost 1,500 cases were recorded in the last year, compared to just over 700 three years ago.

    Helen Westerman from the charity says: "We're really concerned that we've seen a huge increase in the number of police-recorded offences against children relating to sex crimes.

    "Twenty-two cyber-related sex crimes being reported a day in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and the figures have doubled in the last five years."

    The charity is calling on the next prime minister to prioritise online safety.

    Investigations are continuing this morning after a woman's body was found in a car in Bramham, near Wetherby.

    Forensic teams have been examining a grey BMW X5 found parked at the side of Thorner Lane yesterday morning.

    Police are treating the woman's death as ''unexplained''.

    Officers were contacted by the ambulance service, who were called to the scene shortly before midday on Monday.

    Police say they are keen to hear from anyone who saw the vehicle between 22:00 Sunday and 06:15 Monday.

    A 26-year-old man has been charged with seven separate counts of burglary committed over three days in Hull, police say.

    Officers say the incidents were reported to have occurred at seven different homes in north and west Hull.

    Stephen Palmer, 26, from Dalwood Close in Hull has been charged with the offences dating between 20 and 22 June 2019.

    He is due to appear before Hull Magistrates Court today.

    Police in West Yorkshire say they are concerned for the safety of a 32-year-old woman missing from Leeds.

    Kelly Hargreaves was reported missing on Monday morning and is believed to be in the Leeds area.

    She's described as white, 5ft 8ins tall and very slim with brown hair.

    Officers are currently searching the city centre and nearby.

    The force wants anyone who sees Kelly to get in touch.

    A project to transform a derelict 1930s cinema into a live music venue in Bradford has been awarded a grant of almost £1m.

    Bradford Live has secured the money from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

    The building, once one of the largest cinemas in Britain with 3,318 seats, has been empty for about 20 years. It is not listed but is in a conservation area.

    It's hoped the £959,500 will go towards giving the building a long-term future.

    A 13-year-old girl has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a car in Leeds.

    West Yorkshire Police said she was knocked down outside Halford’s on Low Road in Hunslet.

    She has been taken to Leeds General Infirmary.

    A van driver had to "swerve dramatically" to avoid hitting a man and his guide dog who had been forced to walk in the road because of badly parked cars, say police

    The near miss incident happened in Lowfields, in Sheffield, after the pavement was blocked by a number of parked cars.

    South Yorkshire Police published the photos saying the van driver had to drive on the wrong side of the road to avoid hitting the man and his dog.

    The force appealed to members of the public to "take other vulnerable road users in to account when parking your car, so that they can safely go about their business".

    Police in North Yorkshire are trying to trace a lorry which failed to stop after being involved in a crash that left a van driver with serious injuries.

    It happened on the A1(M) at junction 51 near Leeming Bar at about 07:10 this morning.

    A 62-year-old man from Stoke-on-Trent was taken to hospital with serious injuries following the crash, which also involved a Jaguar XE.

    An HGV is thought to have been involved but then left the scene.

    Anybody with camera footage who might be able to identify the HGV is asked to get in touch with police.

    A North Yorkshire chippy that made headlines around the world last year as a must-visit destination for Chinese tourists could soon be opening in China.

    Scotts Fish and Chips on the A64, near York, has seen coachloads of visitors wanting to try the traditional British dish, and has even translated their menu for Mandarin and Cantonese speakers.

    But now the owner has agreed a deal in principle with a Chinese consortium to open an "authentic" Scotts in Chengdu

    The southern Chinese city may be more than 5,000 miles away from the York shop but owner Tony Webster says the shop is becoming a household name.

    "Later this year, if all goes to plan, Chinese tourists could be tucking into fish and chips at Scotts in North Yorkshire, while at the same time western tourists could be enjoying traditional fish and chips in southern China".

    The passion for the chippy had been put down to the fish and chips Chinese president Xi Jinping shared with then Prime Minister David Cameron in 2015.

    Officers have released CCTV images of a man who is wanted in connection with the attempted robbery of a woman in her late 80s in Hull city centre.

    It happened outside Europa House, on Ferensway, at about 14:30 on 20 May.

    Police say a man tried to pull the woman’s handbag from her as she was leaving Mecca Bingo and pulled her over leaving her with a lump on her head.

    The man ran off empty handed in the direction of Carr Lane towards the Bonus Arena - three men tried to stop him but the suspect managed to get away from them.

    He's described as 5ft 9ins tall, with short hair and was wearing dark clothing.

    Police believe the images show he has a tattoo on his neck.

  17. Woman injured in climbing fallpublished at 16:13 British Summer Time 24 June 2019

    A woman had to be airlifted to hospital after falling while climbing in North Yorkshire.

    The 21-year-old, from the Durham area, sustained serious injuries, at the Wainstones, a popular climbing area on the moors above Stokesley.

    Volunteers from the Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team were able to drive over fields to within about 200m from the crag along with a paramedic from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service.

    She was treated at the scene then carried on a mountain rescue stretcher to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and transported to Middlesbrough's James Cook University Hospital.

    Animals caught up in house fires are now "safer than ever" after firefighters have been trained to use specially-designed oxygen masks.

    The equipment will now be carried on all South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue (SYFR) appliances.

    It follows a fire earlier this month where an animal was revived in Sheffield using one of the Smokey Paws masks.

    SYFR said it has attended 133 house fires involving pets over the past five years.

    A serving police officer who stole £65 from a dead man's wallet has been jailed for 15 months for trying to cover up the theft.

    Paul Wallace, 47, a police constable with Humberside Police, stole the money after being given the role of liaison officer to the family of Paul Rutter, who had died suddenly in Leconsfield, in June 2015.

    He later tried to cover up the theft by planting £65 in the police property store, amending his pocket notebook and duping another officer to find the money after a complaint was made by the deceased man's partner.

    Wallace, of Willowdale, Hull, pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice at an earlier hearing and was sentenced at Grimsby Crown Court earlier.

    Internal misconduct procedures are now under way, according to Humberside Police, after Wallace "failed to uphold and maintain the high standards both we, and more importantly, the public expect".

    The parents of a man who took his own life after battling with a gambling addiction have welcomed NHS plans to open its first gambling clinic for children and young people.

    Jack Ritchie, from Sheffield, started gambling with his dinner money at the local bookies when he was 17. Seven years later, he took his own life.

    His parents Liz and Charlie, who founded the charity Gambling with Lives, welcomed the news of the clinic for people aged 13 to 25, saying "Of course it's wonderful. And if Jack had had a referral there, then it probably would have saved him."

    The new clinic for young people will open this year in London as part of an expansion of NHS services across England.

    Fourteen other clinics for adult gambling addicts are set to open - the first in Leeds this summer, followed by others in Manchester and Sunderland.
