"Items discovered in similar ground conditions in Coppergate helped change the world’s perception of the Vikings and made York world-renowned," he said.

"The chance to do the same for the Romans makes this one of the most exciting projects in the world."

The singer used to visit Kirkby Malzeard near Ripon in the 1970s and campaigners trying to resurrect The Henry Jenkins Inn think a bit of star quality might help them bring back a "vital community asset".

June Fountain, one of the campaigners trying to save the pub, says Crosby was a popular visitor to the area.

"He was a shooting man and he used to shoot on Delagil estate and, being a sports person, he came down here and knocked a few cricket balls about," she says.

"In 1976 he donated more than £1,000 to the HIghside playing field. That's about £10,000 in today's money."

Another campaigner, Richard Sadler, says life in the village has not been the same since the pub closed.

"It was a wonderful place and, like any community pub, it was the throbbing heart of the village, which is why we're so keen to bring it back," Mr Sadler says.
