  1. Transgender hate crime reports more than treblepublished at 09:24 British Summer Time 27 June 2019

Police forces in West and South Yorkshire say reporting of transgender hate crimes in both counties has more than trebled over three years.

    Hate crime card

It comes as data obtained by the BBC showed there were 1,944 such crimes across 36 forces in the last financial year compared with 1,073 in 2016-17.

The Stonewall equal rights charity said it showed the "consequences of a society where transphobia is everywhere".

The number of transgender hate crimes recorded by police forces in England, Scotland and Wales has risen by 81%, latest figures suggest.

The Home Office said it was "committed to tackling hate crime".

  2. Whitby couple's kept dogs in 'squalid' conditionspublished at 09:09 British Summer Time 27 June 2019

The animals, belonging to Mandy Allinson and Michael Connolly, lived in a "dark, filthy" barn, a court heard.

Allinson, 52, and Connolly, 56, were handed a 10-week prison term, suspended for a year, and banned from keeping cats for seven years.

The pair bred puppies at Fotherley Farm in Grosmont in North Yorkshire.

York Magistrates' Court heard RSPCA inspectors found "atrocious" conditions after a tip-off by people who found fleas and worms in puppies they bought from the farm.

District Judge Lower said the animals had "wholly inappropriate bedding" made of their own faeces because of a lack of other bedding.

The court heard that instead of caring for the animals, Connolly spent his time looking after Allinson, who was said to suffer from depression.

During the inspection Connolly told the RSPCA he had "had enough" and no longer felt able to look after the animals.

Ms Trowhill, from Hull Action for Ashes, said she thought the meeting with Mr Gauke "went really well".

"The one thing that is for certain is that the parents in Hull will not give up, we will keep pursuing an independent inquiry," she said.

It's after the Environmental Audit Committee suggested Britain has one of the worst records in Europe for "food insecurity" and many children are continuing to rely on school meals.

The committee found food insecurity in the UK, which is defined as “limited access to food, due to lack of money or other resources,” is significant and growing.

Its report found levels to be among the worst in Europe, "especially for children, with 19% of under 15s living with an adult who is moderately or severely food insecure."

Labour MP Mary Creagh said more children were growing up in homes where parents do not have enough money to put food on the table.

The government says it accepts the arguments, but won't be creating a new post to deal with them.
