Plans to build more than 500 homes next to an ancient peat bog in York are set to be turned down by City of York Council.
Askham Bog nature reserve is a 120-acre site left behind by a retreating glacier 15,000 years ago.
Planning officers have recommended the scheme to build 516 homes next to it is refused at a meeting next week.
They say it would be an inappropriate development in the Green Belt and would have an adverse impact on the bog.
More than 7,600 letters of objection to the scheme were received and Sir David Attenborough spoke out against the plans in January.
Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, which runs the nature reserve and is vigorously opposed to the development off Moor Lane, welcomed the news.
Louise Wilkinson, from the trust, said: “Yorkshire Wildlife Trust is delighted the council has recommended refusal for the Moor Lane application.
"The trust has been extremely concerned if approval was given to the application the reserve at Askham Bog, which the trust has looked after since 1946, would steadily deteriorate."

A man from West Yorkshire is applying to the High Court for the right to die with the help of a doctor.
Paul Lamb, 63, was paralysed from the neck down following a car crash nearly 30 years ago.
He lost a Supreme Court case in 2014, but argues that opinions on assisted dying have changed since then.
Mr Lamb, from Leeds, would need help to end his life, but assisting a suicide is a criminal offence carrying a maximum 14-year prison sentence.
Through his law firm Leigh Day and charity Humanists UK, he's applied to the High Court for permission to judicially review the UK’s law on assisted dying.
In his application he argues he has an "irreversible disability which causes him intolerable pain and suffering, as a result of which he wishes to be able to take his own life at a time of his choosing".
Mr Lamb says: "I've been fighting this basic human right of choice over one’s own life since 2013. I need to have peace of mind that I can make the decision to end my life with dignity."

SCR chairman James Muir said the rule change was "regrettable" and that Chesterfield "has benefited hugely" from being part of the LEP, but Chesterfield's council leader Tricia Gilby said there was "no option" if the authority is going to comply with the new system.
