    Police officers in Huddersfield are trying to find a "distressed" woman who was seen on a bike track in the town earlier today.

    The woman, who is thought to be in her 20s, was seen at about 07:30 on the track near Red Doles Road.

    She is described as white, with dark brown hair, and wearing a mustard yellow top, black trousers and blue shoes.

    Officers say they want to speak to the woman to make sure she is OK.

    A blue plaque has been unveiled at the former home of Kes author Barry Hines.

    The plaque, from The Yorkshire Society, is on the house in Hoyland, Barnsley where Mr Hines lived.

    Hines' novel A Kestrel for a Knave tells the story of a poor South Yorkshire boy who adopts a wild kestrel, and was made into the film Kes by director Ken Loach in 1969.

    Mr Loach, who attended the unveiling, said: "It's a very fitting tribute to a great writer.

    "Kes is very special to me because it's lasted so long in people's memories - it's a testament to Barry's writing."

    A 23-year-old man from North Yorkshire is wanted on recall to prison after breaching the conditions of his release.

    Police are asking members of the public to report any sightings of James Ashley Jon Sowden, whose last known address was Farm Way, Selby.

    He was released from prison on licence in January after serving three months of a 12-month jail term for assault causing actual bodily harm.

    He's since breached the terms of his licence and is now wanted for recall to prison.

    Officers say they've carried out numerous inquiries to locate him, but he remains wanted.

    Anyone who has seen him or knows where he is being urged to contact North Yorkshire Police.

    Tens of thousands of pounds in cash has been found hidden in a car by West Yorkshire Police.

    The £10, £20 and £50 notes totalling more than £50,000 were found concealed in a Vauxhall Zafira yesterday.

    The money was seized after the car was stopped on the A1, the force said.

    It's expected to increase opportunities for learners and employers in the region.

    William Young, 51, is wanted in connection with historic sex offences in Merseyside.

    He is described as being 6ft tall, of "proportionate build", with grey hair and blue eyes.

    He has links to Leeds and West Yorkshire.

    A snake, affectionately named Hissy Elliot, has been rescued from a bin in Sheffield.

    The RSPCA were called out after the royal python was spotted in a black bin in the west of the city.

    Two drivers have been caught travelling at 121mph in a 50mph zone imposed to protect workers on the side of the road.

    The drivers were caught as they entered a 50mph stretch of on M62 at about 11:30 today.

    Traffic police posted a picture of the offending vehicles, seen above in lanes two and three, describing the way they were being driven as "unbelievable".

    Oliver Duke Wharton, 23, who has links to York and Wakefield, was released from prison on licence last month after serving 11 months of 20-month jail term for assault causing actual bodily harm.

    North Yorkshire Police say he has since breached the terms of his licence and is now wanted for recall.

    The force has asked for anyone who has seen him or knows where he is to come forward.

    Officers say they forced entry into a property in Harehills at about 21:00 last night.

    They found the cannabis and seized a vehicle.

    The West Yorkshire force say inquiries into the find are continuing.

    Jamie Chappell's mum, Lauren, says the family have been "really lucky" to be selected by the charity WellChild for the makeover, with artificial grass giving Jamie a safe area to practice his walking using a frame.

    WellChild workers and volunteers from Rhodar - a specialist asbestos removal firm - also laid decking to give the family space for BBQs.

    A North Yorkshire mum says her son has been left "too scared to go outside" after being attacked and shot six times by a youth with a BB gun.

    The incident happened in Pickering, where there are claims of ongoing problems with anti-social behaviour in parts of the town centre.

    The boy's mum says: "My son was approached by a group of boys in a park who asked him to spell their names.

    "He has dyslexia and so couldn't do that, so they pulled out an automatic BB gun and shot him six times in the legs and face.

    "He went to hospital for all the injuries, swelling and bruising. Now he doesn't sleep, has night terrors, doesn't want to go to school or leave the house."

    North Yorkshire Police says over the past week it's been "running high-visibility patrols, to provide reassurance".

    Police say three males were asked to leave the Pickering area last night as part of a dispersal order and were told they'd be arrested if they returned.

    Several cars have been destroyed as a result of a fire in Pontefract.

    Two fire crews were called to the blaze at a vehicle compound on Skinner Lane at about 05:00 this morning.

    A total of seven cars were alight when firefighters arrived, according to West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

    An anti-knife crime song, which features the star of documentary A Northern Soul, is to be premiered in Hull tonight.

    The Beat Bus project, which was featured in Sean McAllister's acclaimed film, is behind the No More Knives track.

    Steve Arnott (pictured) says he hopes it'll help educate young people about the dangers of getting involved with knife crime.

    He said: "Urban music, hip-hop music, Grime music speaks to young people, so I think if you can use the music they're into and then put a message into it, that's definitely the best way into their world."

    The song will be launched at Hull's Barrow Boys bar at 19:30 and will go live on YouTube at the same time.

    Proceeds from the track will go to anti-knife crime charity the Rich Foundation.

    A new artwork by artist Liliane Lijn has been unveiled at the University of Leeds.

    The nine metre-high, revolving 'Converse Column' stands at the university's south entrance, adjacent to the Nexus innovation hub.

    A university spokesperson said: "The work that Liliane has created is designed to represent communication and to inspire collaboration and innovation with real world impact."

  20. Asian rape victim highlights 'shame of hidden child abuse'published at 10:34 British Summer Time 4 July 2019

    An Asian woman raped by a relative as a child has spoken out after 50 years to highlight the issue of hidden sex abuse.

    Zlakha Ahmed, from Rotherham, was five when she was was repeatedly abused over a two-year period.

    The 56-year-old said her parents never talked about the abuse for fear of her bringing shame on the family.

    A spokeswoman for the Muslim Women's Network said child sex abuse was "endemic in South Asian communities".

    Recalling the abuse at the hands of her mother's cousin, who is now dead, Ms Ahmed said: "I didn't know what was happening but I knew that, whatever was happening, that I'd been told I had to keep it a secret."
