    On Monday, police issued CCTV of a man they wanted to speak to following the incident in the Fishergate area of the city.

    North Yorkshire Police say the man has now been identified and is assisting officers with their investigation.

    A South Yorkshire Labour MP says this parliamentary term will be his last and he will not contest another general election.

    Kevin Barron, who has represented the Rother Valley since 1983, revealed the decision after Labour asked MPs to indicate whether they would like to stand for the party at the next general election.

    In a Twitter post, he said: "It has been the greatest honour to represent the people of Rother Valley in Parliament for over 36 years and I sincerely thank all of my constituents for their support over the years."

    A driver doing 112mph on the motorway in East Yorkshire was caught by police this morning.

    The motorist was spotted by officers driving at more than 40mph over the speed limit on the M62 near Goole at about 11:30.

    The driver, who was in a Vauxhall Corsa, was reported to the courts, police say.

    Arsonists have caused thousands of pounds of damage after setting fire to parasols outside a Sheffield city centre cinema.

    The Showroom Cinema was undamaged in the blaze, but CCTV shows three people setting fire to the outside deck at about 02:30 this morning, the fire service says.

    The two parasols were on fire when fire crews arrived, with a table and decking also damaged in the attack.

    Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to contact police.

    Police in York have launched an investigation after a man in his 60s was attacked by a teenager.

    The assault happened in York's Fulford Mews at about 23:30 last night when the victim was walking his dog.

    The man was punched in the face by the teenager, who's believed to be between 16 and 18 years of age, and who was with two other boys.

    The attacker was wearing a black t-shirt which had three large white letters on it.

    Following the assault the three boys rode away on bicycles.

    The victim required hospital treatment and his injuries may leave him with long-term damage to his vision, police say.

    Anyone with any information about the incident is being urged to contact North Yorkshire Police.

    A devout Christian who was thrown off a course at the University of Sheffield for Facebook comments saying that homosexuality was a sin has won an appeal against the decision.

    Felix Ngole was removed from a postgraduate social work course in 2016 after expressing what he's described as a traditional Christian view that "the Bible and God identify homosexuality as a sin".

    The 39-year-old from Barnsley argued that throwing him out breached his rights to freedom of speech and thought and judges have now overturned a previous court ruling.

    The University of Sheffield, which has been told it should reconsider the case, said it was considering its response to the judgement.

    A Huddersfield off-licence has lost the right to sell alcohol after being found with a screw inserted in its electricity meter to steal energy.

    Police visited Top News, on Colne Road in Aspley, discovering the illegal modification which has been described as “not only criminal but highly dangerous” and could have resulted in a fire or explosion.

    Owner Basharat Ali, of Mount Pleasant, Rawtenstall, is estimated to have stolen £1,000 of electricity in the six-month period leading up to May when the bypass was discovered.

    He was not present at the hearing at Huddersfield Town Hall where he was described as “reckless and stupid” in tampering with the electrical supply, putting himself and others at risk of death and serious injury.

    Police inquiries showed he had previously been the owner of Top News on John William Street in Huddersfield town centre, which had similarly been caught “abstracting” electricity.

    Kirklees Council revoked the premises' 24-hour alcohol licence, saying the decision had been taken in regard to public safety and for the prevention of crime and disorder.

    Members of the the Independent Monitoring Board work to ensure proper standards of care and decency are maintained at the prison.

    The role is described as important with dealing with any potential issues inside prisons, with volunteers required to visit three to four times a month.

    Police have issued a fresh appeal for help finding a 23-year-old Sheffield man who has been missing for more than three weeks.

    Minod Monger was last seen in the Ecclesfield area of Sheffield at about 17:30 on Tuesday 11 June and officers have been searching for him since then using dogs and drones.

    His family is said to be "extremely worried" about Mr Monger, who it's thought could be surviving by foraging in a park in the Parson Cross area of the city or hiding out in woodland.

    South Yorkshire Police say he is capable of walking long distances and could have travelled into neighbouring counties.

    Ch Insp Helen Lewis said: “If you are out in the countryside, look for any signs of rough-sleeping. If you’re out walking your dog, keep an eye out for him. Check your sheds and outbuildings."

    Members of the public are asked not to approach Mr Monger, who has "has additional learning needs, which mean he may become stressed or scared around strangers" and to contact police in the event of any sightings.

    A "muscular" man wearing a balaclava and carrying a "suspicious" object resembling a firearm is being hunted by police in Castleford.

    The man was seen outside a house on Love Lane at about 21:00 on Monday.

    Police say he was wearing an olive green tracksuit top, dark grey jogging bottoms and gloves.

    He drove away in a red Vauxhall Vectra which was found by police on Hastings Crescent in Castleford yesterday.

    Det Insp Jordan Piper said: "We would very much like to speak to anyone who saw the incident, the suspect vehicle or suspect in the area, or who saw the red Vectra being abandoned on Hastings Crescent.

    “Officers have increased patrols in the area to reassure residents and it should be remembered that offences involving firearms, or suspected firearms, are very rare in the Wakefield district,” he added.

    A leading Roman Catholic boarding school in North Yorkshire has been criticised for not meeting safeguarding standards.

    Inspectors also raised concerns over bullying at Ampleforth College and said physical abuse was not always recorded properly.

    The school said it was investigating all the issues highlighted.

    The college's acting head teacher, Deirdre Rowe, who was appointed in August, will hand over to a new interim head by September, it added.

    "They will bring considerable change management and safeguarding expertise to the role, before we make an announcement on the appointment of a permanent head by the end of the year," the college said.

    Miss Rowe decided to step down in March before the Independent Schools Inspectorate visited the college in May.

    Police in Doncaster are trying to find a woman in connection with a sexual assault in 2016.

    It's reported that a 30-year-old woman was attacked between 1 June and 3 September 2016, with the offence finally being reported to police in April 2019.

    It happened at a property on Thorne Road.

    An e-fit of a woman police want to speak to has been created to try and identify a person involved.

    It's thought the woman had a tattoo of grey and white flowers at the top of her left arm, going over onto her shoulder.

    Anyone with information is being asked to contact police.

    A 74-year-old woman has died following a house fire in Huddersfield, police say.

    Julia Flynn was taken to hospital after the fire on 17 June at a house on Leeds Road.

    She died in hospital on Saturday, more than a week after the incident.

    Det Chf Insp Heather Whoriskey, said: “I appeal to anyone who witnessed any suspicious behaviour in the area, late on Monday 17 June, or in the early hours of Tuesday 18 June, to come forward.”
