Protesters' last hope of overturning proposals to build a traffic gyratory around a Barnsley park has evaporated after a request to get the plans reviewed failed to gain any new support.
Five councillors had asked for a "call-in" over the gyrator plan for Penny Pie Park, which is aimed at easing traffic congestion between the M1 and Barnsley town centre at the Dodworth Road crossroads.
As a result of the call-in, a decision by the council’s ruling Cabinet to switch use of some of the parkland for the planned new road went before a meeting of councillors for fresh scrutiny.
It was the first time in more than a decade that a decision by Barnsley Council’s Cabinet was called back for further examination.
But after 90 minutes of explanation and questioning over the decision to build the gyratory, only the five councillors who originally requested the call-in voted for the council to re-examine its decision.
The scheme is regarded by the council as the only viable way to improve traffic flow in the area.
