    A popular Hull tourist attraction is to be moved this weekend ahead of work which will see it put at the heart of a celebration of the city's maritime history.

    The historic fishing trawler Arctic Corsair will be taken to Alexandra Dock for renovation.

    It'll be the first time it's moved in 20 years and will eventually be the centrepiece of a new £27.5m maritime attraction built on a former shipbuilding yard in Hull city centre.

    The Arctic Corsair was caught up in the Cod Wars in the 1970s, when Icelandic gunboats rammed British trawlers to try and stop them fishing off their coast.

    A former Victorian mill in Mytholmroyd has been gutted and part of it will be demolished following a fire yesterday.

    Fire crews were called at about 17:45 on Thursday to the former home of Walkley Clogs, near Hebden Bridge.

    Two package holiday firms, including one based in York, have collapsed, affecting more than 50,000 travellers.

    Malvern Group, which incorporates Late Rooms and York-based Superbreak Mini Holidays, known as Super Break, has ceased trading.

    The group said Super Break hotel-only holidays would be cancelled and people currently on holiday might have to pay again.

    It said it "anticipated" bookings through Late Rooms would be secure.

    Malvern Group said, external those on package holidays would be protected by the travel association Abta.

    But vouchers and tickets for entertainment, attractions or the Incredible North Iceland Charter were no longer valid, it said.

    Train operator East Midlands Trains says "predicted flooding" forced the closure, with people wanting to get to the Hope Valley being advised to not travel.

    The firm hopes to re-open the railway "as soon as it is safe to do so", with ticket acceptance in place on alternative routes.

  7. Demolition for blaze-hit mill in Mytholmroydpublished at 08:30 British Summer Time 2 August 2019

    A Victorian mill in Calderdale is set to be demolished following a major blaze.

    Fire crews were called at about 17:45 on Thursday to the former home of Walkley Clogs at Mytholmroyd, near Hebden Bridge.

    A total of 15 appliances tackled the blaze which is now out.

    Burnley Road is still closed this morning following last night's fire, with Calderdale Council saying it's carrying out a demolition at the site.

    The building closed in 2002 after a spell as a tourist attraction and has been derelict ever since.

    If you're making a journey on the rails in Yorkshire this Friday morning, most services appear to be running to time.

    However, be aware that lines between Hazel Grove/Marple in Derbyshire and Sheffield are blocked due to the ongoing risk of a dam collapsing at Toddbrook Reservoir.

    The East Midlands Trains service has been suspended between Liverpool Lime Street and Sheffield. Trains will run only between Sheffield and Norwich.

    Meanwhile:

    • The 08:33 Sheffield to Manchester Piccadilly service has been cancelled
    • The 09:08 Doncaster to Hull via Selby service has been cancelled
    • The 09:14 Sheffield to Manchester Piccadilly service has been cancelled

    Firefighters from South Yorkshire are helping colleagues in Derbyshire where a dam is at risk of collapsing, threatening a nearby town.

    Thousands of people have been evacuated from Whaley Bridge, where the reservoir dam has been damaged following a period of heavy rain.

    A high-volume pump from Aston Park fire station in Sheffield has been sent to help lower the water level so workers can make the dam safe.

    An operational support officer is also being sent by South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, the service said.

  11. Boy, 14, hit with a BMX during 'assault and robbery'published at 17:55 British Summer Time 1 August 2019

    A 14-year-old boy has been injured after being hit with his own BMX during an alleged assault and robbery in Hull.

    The teenager was approached by a group of between six and seven other youths, one of them who took his BMX and hit him.

    The victim sustained injuries to his head and face in incident which happened on 14 July near the junction of Ferensway and Brooke Street.

    Humberside Police say a distinctive black Dub Vans BMX bike with black and red tyres and a green camouflage seat was stolen.

    North Yorkshire Police has said it is investigating a leak of confidential documents from Scarborough Council, two days after denying the claim.

    It comes after confidential documents showing the council would borrow £22m to fund a town centre regeneration scheme appeared online.

    Last week, the authority’s legal director, Lisa Dixon, said North Yorkshire Police’s cybercrime unit had been brought in and the investigation was “in their hands” - with a number of documents handed over.

    But when asked about it, a spokesperson for the force said: “We are not currently investigating this matter.”

    Now Ch Insp Rachel Wood, says: “Further to our statement on Tuesday, I'd like to clarify North Yorkshire Police have opened an investigation into the matters raised to us by Scarborough Borough Council.

    "The investigation is at an early stage and we are still gathering relevant information and evidence.”

    The leak revealed the council would almost double its debt, demolishing the former Argos building in Newborough, to make way for accommodation for students and trainee medics.

  13. Appeal to trace driver hit by object thrown off Selby roofpublished at 17:29 British Summer Time 1 August 2019

    Police are trying to trace the driver of a Range Rover which was hit by an object thrown from the roof of a building in Selby.

    Officers say the motorist may have been "unaware of the origin" of the object after they were hit while driving along Gowthorpe.

    Witnesses report seeing the vehicle stop and the driver getting out before returning to their car and continuing their journey.

    The driver has now been asked to get in contact with police following the incident which happened between 19:10 and 19:40 on 23 July.

    North Yorkshire Police have also received reports of objects being thrown from the roof of a building in the town.

  14. Arrests over violent robbery in Hull city centrepublished at 17:10 British Summer Time 1 August 2019

    Seven people have been arrested by officers investigating a violent robbery in Hull this morning.

    A man called police at about 03:45 to say he had been robbed and injured outside Paragon Station in the city centre.

    He suffered minor injuries and had his wallet taken.

    Two men were found at a nearby property on Pease Street. Both were arrested on suspicion of robbery, and one on suspicion of burglary.

    While at the property, police arrested two women and a further three men for a number of offences including supplying a controlled drug, possessing a bladed weapon, possessing an offensive weapon, and theft.

    All seven people remain in custody, Humberside Police said.

  15. Plans to convert former mill into homeless hostel revealedpublished at 16:58 British Summer Time 1 August 2019

    Plans to turn a derelict West Yorkshire mill into accommodation for vulnerable adults have revealed.

    Midshire Supported Housing Trust wants to convert the empty Kyme Mills, in Bradford, into a hostel for homeless and vulnerable people which would have more than 70 beds.

    A planning application for the project has been submitted to Bradford Council.

    The large former textile mill on Napier Terrace was built in the early 20th century and is currently empty.

    Most recently it's been used as a tyre and furniture store and for indoor markets.

    A scheme to collect, recycle and redistribute school uniforms to families in need around Hull says it's been inundated with donations.

    The Re-uniform scheme was set up by Labour MP for Hull West and Hessle Emma Hardy.

    She's been campaigning about the costs of school uniform and the burden it places on struggling families.

    Volunteers say they have been impressed by the condition of much of the donated uniform and there are plans to run the scheme on an annual basis.

    A football fan has told a court that a police officer attempted to "goad" him before punching him in the face repeatedly.

    PC Liam Stewart, 33, is accused of punching Chesterfield supporter Louis McAndrew, 18, in the Hillsborough area of Sheffield on 8 August 2017.

    Mr McAndrew told Leeds Crown Court he was grabbed by the throat during the alleged attack and "couldn't breathe".

    A group of Sea Cadets have had their £3,000 boat stolen from a sailing club in Goole.

    The orange Ridgflex 360 boat was taken from Southfield Reservoir at about 19:30 on Tuesday 23 July.

    Humberside Police say three men arrived in two vehicles before breaking into the club and making off with the 3.5-m-long boat, which belongs to Sea Cadets based in West Yorkshire.

    Officers have received CCTV footage, but have been unable to identify any suspects and they are now appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
