Geoffrey Boycott: MPs react to knighthoodpublished at 16:00 British Summer Time 10 September 2019
Two of Yorkshire's MPs have reacted to the news that Geoffrey Boycott has been awarded a knighthood.
Boycott was one of 57 names to whom Theresa May awarded knighthoods in her resignation honours list.
Sheffield Heeley's Labour MP Louise Haigh described him as an "embarrassment to Yorkshire" on Twitter.
But Conservative MP for Selby, Nigel Adams, said he was "delighted" for Mr Boycott.
Mr Adams said: "It's a great honour. Some would say it's been a long time coming. Today is about celebrating this wonderful honour. I'm so pleased for him."
Domestic abuse charities and the Labour Party said the honour should be removed from the ex-cricketer, who was convicted of beating his girlfriend in France in 1998.
Boycott has always denied the assault.
He has said he "couldn't give a toss" about criticism over Theresa May awarding him a knighthood.
