    Former police officer John Thompson, 91, was told there had been a security breach on his account and he needed to move his cash into a new one.

    The fraudsters used sophisticated methods to bypass his call blocking software to make it look like they were calling from his local branch.

    But a crowdfunder launched by the Yorkshire Post to raise the stolen £14,700 has now hit more than £11,000.

    A £1,000 reward is being offered to the person who can help trace thieves who stripped lead from an ancient North Yorkshire church.

    The Grade II-listed St Hilda's Church, at Sherburn, near Malton, dates back to the 12th Century.

    It was badly damaged at the weekend after rainwater poured in through the damaged roof.

    Keith Usher the church's warden says: "We've had an anonymous person offer £1,000 for the possibility of any information and the arrest of the thieves.

    "Anything is worth passing on and hopefully it'll lead to getting the thieves arrested."

    The thieves have been branded as "selfish and disgraceful" by police.

    A 14-year-old girl has gone missing in East Yorkshire, police say.

    Simone Hughes was last seen in Flamborough at 11:00 yesterday.

    Officers say when last seen she was wearing a white padded jacket and pink trainers.

    The teenager is described as 5ft 5ins tall with shoulder length straight blonde hair.

    The Humberside force says it believes she may be in the Bridlington area.

    Anyone who sees her is being asked to contact police.

    People in York have had their first glimpse of the city's latest landmark: a mural of a nationally endangered beetle.

    Tansy beetles were thought to only exist along the River Ouse in York, until one was discovered near Huntingdon in 2014.

    A "quantity" of jewellery was stolen from the guest house on North Marine Road in Scarborough on 9 September, police say.

    Officers believe the man could be from the Middlesbrough area and want anyone who recognises him to get in touch.

    Police believe the cyclist involved was also injured but failed to stop at the scene.

    The incident happened on the coastal path in Sewerby, near Bridlington, at about 15:00 on 8 August.

    Officers want anyone who recognises the man in the image, or the man himself, to get in touch.

    The men damaged the front of the store to get into the office area, but left empty-handed as the alarm was triggered and they fled the scene.

    Police searching for a missing woman have found a body on land behind a supermarket near Catterick in North Yorkshire.

    The body, which has not yet been identified, was found behind the Lidl store at Brough with St Giles, just before 17:00 yesterday.

    Officers say a 44-year-old man's been arrested on suspicion of murder following the discovery and remains in custody.

    The first of thousands of knitted rainbow-coloured cycling jerseys used as bunting during the UCI cycling world championships in North Yorkshire have been delivered to Madagascar.

    The bike race last month across the Harrogate District attracted thousands of spectators from around the world.

    Ripon councillor Stuart Martin established the Madagascan charity, TASC, which builds schools in the country as well as supporting poor and needy children.

    Mr Martin has taken 50 of the jumpers from Yorkshire with him to Madagascar to give to babies in need of clothing. With lots more ready to go on the next trip.

    He's also sending some of the miniature woolies to a woman working with poor mothers and young babies in Kenya.

    Mr Martin said: "It’s a great pleasure to be able to take some of the larger jerseys with me and give them to some of the poorest people in the world.

    "Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible, as you can see they are really welcomed."

    A fire at a farm in Barnsley which caused thousands of pounds' worth of damage earlier this week was probably started deliberately, police say.

    Emergency crews were called to the barn fire at a farm in Oxpring at about 06:35 on Monday morning. It took most of the day to extinguish the blaze.

    A "huge amount" of valuable stock was destroyed and "extensive damage" was caused to farm buildings and equipment, according to police.

    Officers say they now want to hear from anyone who was in the area on Monday and who may have seen anything suspicious.

    PC Heather Brown says: "The farm is in a very remote area but does overlook the Trans Pennine trail.

    "If anyone was out jogging or walking early on Monday morning, please think as to whether you saw anyone else in the area."
