Those making a flying visit to the gents on the first floor are being greeted with a written request to keep the door closed in a bid to stop the birds winging their way into the rest of the historic building.

Wakefield Council, which does much of its business in the building, said birds had been getting into and out of the toilets through open windows.

The sign, which was spotted by one eagle-eyed passer-by this week, said: "Please keep the toilet door closed, hopefully this will contain unwelcomed feathery visitors."

It follows a meeting of local businesses last week which saw some Harrogate town traders call for reimbursement, claiming they'd been treated as “collateral damage” during the competition.

However, a Yorkshire 2019 spokesperson has now said reimbursement from the organisation would not be forthcoming.

“We’re sorry if some businesses have reported a reduction in trade during the UCI Road World Championships, but we’re not in the position to offer compensation,” he said.

“We liaised extensively with businesses in the three years leading up to the championships to ensure they had the opportunity to mitigate against any impact on trade, and equally capitalise on the opportunity,” the spokesperson said.

North Yorkshire County Council echoed Yorkshire 2019’s position, stating it had worked closely with the organisers to widely advertise road closures and help businesses plan for the event.

The UCI Road World Championships took place in Harrogate between 22 and 29 September.

Heavy rainfall had a significant impact on the spectator area in part of the town's 200 acre Stray.

The area used was described as being left like "a battlefield" by the Stray Defence Association, which was formed to protect the site.

Harrogate Borough Council said repair costs would be not known until staff are able to access the site.

Conservative leader Richard Cooper told the Local Democracy Reporting Service he was working with Yorkshire 2019, who organised the event, to see if it had "any leverage with their insurers" to help fund recovery work.
