There was silence in the jury box and the public gallery as the courtroom listened to the list of names.

Mr Duckenfield, who was match commander at the FA Cup semi final in 1989, denies gross negligence manslaughter of 95 men, women and children.

The 96th victim, Tony Bland, is not included because he died four years later - outside the time limit for this offence.

The 75-year-old sat in the well of the court wearing a suit and blue tie. His wife, Ann, was in the public gallery, as were about eight relatives of victims.

Fourteen people, 12 to make up the jury and two additional jurors who will sit through the opening, were selected from a panel of 30 at Preston Crown Court.

The prosecution will open its case on Thursday.

  4. Landslip-hit Scarborough beach chalets could be replacedpublished at 12:38 British Summer Time 8 October 2019

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Scarborough Council is to spend an estimated £473,000 to make safe an area of the town’s South Bay and pave the way to replace beach chalets destroyed in a landslip last year.

The council set £128,000 aside last year for the demolition which would have made the area safe but not allow for the chalets to be built again.

The extra £345,000 will come from the authority's insurance reserve.

If the plan is approved by the cabinet next Tuesday, and then the full council, the demolition could start immediately, with a new retaining wall scheduled to be completed by July 2020.

The price of replacing the chalets would require the council to find a further £243,000, with a private partnership being explored.

These include selling the 11 chalets on a 30-year lease for £30,000 each or for the council to keep the buildings to provide a constant source of income.

Project manager Chris Bourne said in a report to the council: "Finally, the council can explore the viability of a partnership with an external developer who could replace the chalets at their own cost as part of a business case."

"We feel it is imperative that partners from policing, social care, mental health and other agencies each have a role to play."
