  2. Sir David Attenborough's plea to save 'irreplaceable' bogpublished at 12:45 British Summer Time 9 October 2019

Askham Bog in York, formed by a retreating glacier 15,000 years ago, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest run by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.

Naturalist and broadcaster Sir David spoke out after developers appealed against a City of York Council decision to refuse permission for more than 500 new homes close to the bog.

The company involved, Barwood Land, says the scheme would help solve York's housing shortage, but Sir David says the building plans put the bog's future at risk and has described it as "irreplaceable".

According to Yorkshire Wildlife Trust the bog, the charity's first and oldest nature reserve, is "the richest place in Yorkshire for wildlife".

Today, Sir David said: “I'm disappointed to hear Askham Bog is again under threat. It's hugely valued by the people of York and all naturalists and is part of our cultural and natural heritage."

Yorkshire Wildlife Trust says it needs to raise more than £15,000 to pay for scientific evidence and legal representation at a planning inquiry which is set to start on 12 November.

The Stoneferry Corridor also aims to provide a safer route for cyclists in the city.

Almost 100 residents and businesses joined a consultation earlier this year looking at plans for the route.

They include traffic light-controlled passing points and continuous off-street cycle paths.

There will also be extra signage in a bid to reduce the amount of bridge strikes by high-sided lorries on Stoneferry Bridge.

Almost 6,000m of cycle paths will be created as part of the £8m project, it's hoped.

Earlier this year, councillors described the scheme as 'critical', external, with drivers travelling just 5mph on average from Bransholme towards Stoneferry.

Leeds City Council says it loses £200,000 a year by keeping the nine-hole and 18-hole courses open at Temple Newsam in east Leeds.

The team in Sheffield say that lycopene - a nutrient found in tomatoes - may boost sperm quality.

Healthy men who took the equivalent of two tablespoons of (concentrated) tomato puree a day as a supplement were found to have better quality sperm.

In the 12-week trial, which was partly funded by the company which makes the supplement, 60 men were randomly selected to take 14 micrograms of lycopene per day or a dummy pill.

Lycopene is an antioxidant which means it prevents oxidation in cells, and therefore damage.

It's been linked to other health benefits, including reducing the risk of heart disease and some cancers.
