'Forgotten ones': African-Caribbean miners' story revealedpublished at 13:31 British Summer Time 9 October 2019
A new exhibition telling the story of African-Caribbean miners in Yorkshire and across the UK has opened at the National Coal Mining Museum near Wakefield.
Digging Deep uses art, photos and interviews, external to explore the little told story of the "forgotten ones" working in the country's pits.
One of the miners features is Bill Rose (pictured below), who moved to Yorkshire from Jamaica in 1956.
He spent 30 years as a coal miner, 14 of which he spent working underground.
He says: "Underground you're like brothers. You depend on each other and that's a good thing because it made you look forward to work.
"I've been down, done my bit and enjoyed it while I was there. It's only when I've got time to look back I can see what we've done. Hopefully in some time to come, we'll be praised for it."
The Digging Deep exhibition runs until the New Year.
