  2. Fate of Red House Bronte museum still to be decidedpublished at 12:50 British Summer Time 18 October 2019

The future of a historic house in West Yorkshire with strong links to the Brontes still hasn't been finally decided, it's emerged.

Kirklees Council says "conversations are ongoing" about the Red House museum in Gomersal, following inquiries from what the council describes as "interested parties".

The council-owned museum was closed almost three years ago, with the authority blaming government austerity measures.

Campaigners wanting to stop parts of the site being used for housing have been assured no final decision will be taken until all opportunities to keep the building have been exhausted.

The Red House Heritage Group has now presented a petition to the authority calling for the museum, which has connections to Charlotte Bronte, to be given over to the organisation.

Speaking to councillors, Caroline Goodwill, from the heritage group, referred to the 17th Century house as “a perfect time capsule” and the second most important Bronte site globally after the famous Parsonage in Haworth.

Councillor Graham Turner said the decision to close Red House had been very difficult.

Three applications for the museum to be the subject of a community asset transfer missed the relevant criteria to move forward and all were rejected, he said.

However, Councillor Turner pledged to look closely at any new bids.

The council says it's using its new Smart City platform for the idea, which will help alert police and staff quicker if anyone is causing damage.

The sensors will be placed on equipment and if they're triggered at night when a park is closed a message will be sent back to base and CCTV operators can oversee what's going on.

There are plans to expand the smart technology to help with waste management, traffic issues and parking.

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

At least 100 students were evacuated from a block of flats in Sheffield after a power blackout left them with no water, electricity or fire alarms.

Council officers ordered the emergency evacuation of Royal Riverside on Priestley Street on Wednesday because it was too dangerous for people to stay there without smoke alarms.

The block contains 127 flats, several of which are multiple occupancy.

Both of Sheffield’s universities have helped house the students temporarily, with others accommodated in a local hotel.

The private developers who own the building will be billed by Sheffield Council for the evacuation and accommodation costs.

    Quote Message

Although it’s a private building, the council can get involved if there's a safety issue. We could have had a massive problem having that many people in a building with no fire alarms."

In one week, officers arrested six people and safeguarded 16 adults as part of a national blitz on "county lines" drug activity, say officers.

County lines is where drug gangs use dedicated phone lines to send mass texts to customers and organise networks of couriers, often children and vulnerable adults, to move the drugs from cities to smaller towns.

The North Yorkshire force says it also carried out more than 50 welfare visits to victims of "cuckooing", a practice where drug dealers take over someone's home.

Up until the end of September 2019, the force had made 99 arrests in relation to county lines activities.

Ch Insp Emma Aldred, said: “Due to the exploitation of vulnerable people and the violence associated with it, disrupting county lines remains a major priority for North Yorkshire Police."

  15. Bradford firework hooligans told to 'grow up'published at 08:37 British Summer Time 18 October 2019

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

People who make the bonfire season a misery for Bradford residents have been urged to “grow up” and told they “are not gangsters".

    Fireworks

The call came during a Bradford Council meeting where members voted on two motions to take a tougher stance against anti-social firework use.

Lib Dem leader councillor Jeanette Sunderland called for more “silent” fireworks displays and more organised displays in Bradford’s park while Labour called for a review of fireworks in the district.

Both motions were passed by the council.

Talking about an incident she'd seen involving teens throwing fireworks on a garage forecourt, Jeanette Sunderland, said: “They obviously had no understanding of what happens when you mix gunpowder and petrol."

Councillor Aneela Ahmed, who works for the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, said 5 November "brings out a sort of dread".

"Trying to harm an emergency service worker doesn’t make you look like a gangster."

A protest was held in Bradford's City Park earlier this year against what organisers Bradford4Better described as the city's "horrendous" firework problem.

The firm said it had taken the decision after staff were physically and verbally abused and trams vandalised during last season's corresponding fixture, external.

It said recommendations including reducing the amount of away tickets or managing the transport of away fans weren't supported by Sheffield Wednesday ahead of the fixture on 26 October.

Stagecoach said as a result, trams will not run between Cathedral, Middlewood and Malin Bridge from 10:30 until 12:30 and then 13:30 until 15:30.

South Yorkshire Police "fully supports" the decision to suspend services following the safety concerns last time.
