Historic England has included the city's Grand Quarter in a list of 247 new sites added to its At Risk Register.

The area around the Grand Theatre on New Briggate was the first to be developed beyond Leeds' medieval boundaries in the 1600s and was transformed by cloth merchant John Harrison.

Buildings from each following century remain today, but heavy traffic, empty shops and loss of architectural details have left it looking "down at heel", Historic England said.

The Grand Quarter has recently been chosen as a High Street Heritage Action Zone with Historic England funding due to help revive and improve the area's "special character".

Ossett and South Kirkby have been earmarked as the locations for the energy farms, which could also create jobs and cash, according to Wakefield Council.

If approved, the council says the energy farms could wipe out all carbon emissions from its buildings within 18 months.

Without them, councillors have been warned the local authority could fail to meet its ambition of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

    Quote Message

From conversations I’ve had with officers and colleagues, I think the 2030 target is extremely challenging. If you strip the farms out, we would struggle to meet that commitment.”

  20. Struggling Sheffield sport venue charity gets council helppublished at 16:56 British Summer Time 16 October 2019

Taxpayers in Sheffield will help prop up the charity which runs sporting venues in the city after the council confirmed the organisation was suffering "cash flow problems".

    Ponds ForgeImage source, PA Media

Sheffield City Trust (SCT) was set up in 1987 to oversee the running of sport and leisure facilities like Ponds Forge (pictured) and Sheffield Arena.

However, earlier this year SCT was given a £1m loan from the council to stop it going bust and now the council says it will invest a further £3m over the next 18 months to keep facilities open.

In a report, the council said competition from "low cost operators" and Leeds Arena had an impact on its venues, like hosting events at Sheffield Arena or Sheffield City Hall.

Eugene Walker, executive director of resources at Sheffield City Council, said: “We’re meeting regularly with the trust and agree our priority is to make sure people in all areas of Sheffield have access to top quality, good value and varied leisure and entertainment facilities."
