The Street Aid scheme is a partnership between the council, police and a local charity.

It's based on similar schemes elsewhere in the country, one of which was launched in Harrogate last month.

Donations are made via debit or credit cards being tapped on to the terminal at Spark:York on Piccadilly.

The money raised will be put into a central fund from which organisations supporting the homeless can apply for grants of up to £500.

Jackie McCafferty, from Two Ridings Community Foundation, said: "This provides people with an alternative to giving directly to those begging.

"Pooling donations and working with support services in the city enables those affected by street homelessness and rough sleeping to access a meaningful sum that can really make a difference."

The pledges impacting on Yorkshire include:

    • Northern Powerhouse Rail - improving connections between Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Hull, and Newcastle, and cutting journey times
    • Nine plastics remanufacture and recycling sites - one for each region

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Cold weather teams will remain on standby for an extra two weeks in 2020, Barnsley Council has confirmed.

    A gritter

Long-range weather forecasts mean the council is planning a longer timetable to help keep roads gritted and traffic moving in the event of bad weather.

The authority started the season with 12,000 tonnes of grit salt stockpiled in its silos at Smithies and Penistone.

So far, it has spread only 225 tonnes, leaving 98% of the stockpile available.

Last year’s winter was mild and the council’s gritters used only 3,400 tonnes, meaning the council has a large contingency built into its stockpile to cope with a hard winter.
