The Grade II-listed Old Town Hall was built in 1808 and has stood empty on Waingate since 1996.

The 42,000 sq ft building was formerly the city's courthouse and town hall.

It will now be turned into "pod" hotel rooms and apartments after refurbishment plans were approved yesterday.

Those plans remove most of the building's original features, failing to retain its historic significance, according to the Friends of the Old Town Hall.

"We asked the planning committee to consider seriously retaining Court 1, the most important and ornate of the three major courtrooms, in recognisable form," said chair Valerie Bayliss.

"The developer argued, with support from planning officers, that there is no viable use for the courtrooms other than as the living rooms of the planned serviced apartments.

"This involves removing most of what makes the courtroom legible as a former court.

"Historic England asked the council to do what it could to make sure the historic significance of the building was not just retained but enhanced. It is regrettable the opportunity has been lost".
