  15. Angry reaction to vandals' litter-pick punishmentpublished at 16:41 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2019

Councillors say police should "do their job properly" and have rejected a restorative justice plan for vandals who damaged a public toilet in a South Yorkshire town.

South Yorkshire Police were called to Penistone's public toilet in the Market Barn (pictured) on Shrewsbury Road on 3 December.

They found plastic fittings and the toilet door had been damaged.

The toilet had been restored over several years in a project by the Town Council.

Two youths, aged 17 and 18, admitted causing damage to plastic fittings valued at £50 inside the building.

But councillors have reacted angrily after being told police decided a fitting punishment was an apology from those responsible, payment of £50 compensation and a litter-pick in the Market Barn.

The council says it will cost hundreds of pounds in an insurance excess to repair the damage.

Councillor David Wood said it was not for the public of Penistone to be left to pay the repair bill.

Councillor Steve Marsh also questioned the level of punishment saying: "They need to be in court and have action taken.

“I suggest we go back to the police and tell them to do their job properly and that we want to prosecute."

South Yorkshire Police said offenders are referred for restorative justice after their case has been reviewed by a panel who take into account factors including past history and the nature of the offence.

It happened at Hunmanby Gap on Friday, according to rescue charity British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR), which was alerted to the incident by a member of the public.

Matt Barnes, a Marine Mammal Medic, says: “We found a recently weaned, underweight and bloodied grey seal pup, with puncture wounds to his head and rear flipper surrounded by sand disturbed by dog paw prints.

“Grey seals are currently pupping along the Yorkshire coast and have a hard time, with mortality rates at about 50% during their first year.

"This is reduced further when the risks posed by marine litter and disturbance from people and dogs are factored in”.

The young seal has been taken to a rehabilitation centre where it is hoped it will make a full recovery, the charity said.

The BDMLR is urging all dog owners to familiarise themselves with local beaches and avoid those used by seals to minimise disturbance.
