The Diocese of York has welcomed the announcement of a new Archbishop of York.
The current Bishop of Chelmsford, Stephen Cottrell, will become the 98th Archbishop of York and the Church of England's second most senior clergyman, when Dr John Sentamu steps down next year.
The Bishop of Hull, the Right Reverend Alison White, said: "This is great news. People across the diocese have been praying God would send us the person he is calling to be the next Archbishop of York.
"In Bishop Stephen, these prayers are answered and this is joyful news for us."
Bishop Stephen and his wife Rebecca are expected at York Minster this afternoon to attend a service of prayer in the Minster's Quire.
