The service has been rated as "requires improvement" in both areas in a report by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services, external.

Questions have also been raised about the service's financial viability, with the inspectorate saying: "The delayed introduction of tactical response vehicles has contributed to an estimated budget deficit of £2.5m.

"More generally, the service’s current financial plans rely on using reserve funds, which is unsustainable."

However, the report rated as "good" the way in which the fire service protects the public through fire regulation and responds to fires and other emergencies.

Responding to the report, Andrew Brodie, North Yorkshire's Chief Fire Officer, said: “I think the report provides a fair and balanced view of our service and there are no surprises for us in it.

“There are some areas for improvements that have been identified and we’ve started work on these already."
