Bosses at a Sheffield city centre furniture store say they're to close its doors for the last time next month due to the council's stance on high business rates.

The owners of Stone the Crows, which was set up in 1978, say they pay three times the rates of larger competitors for their store in Barker's Pool.

Store manager Charley Gordon said: "We've had a lot of feedback from customers absolutely heartbroken we're closing down. People are saying it's disgusting.

"They're disgusted at the council charging us three times as much as other department stores."

Responding, the council says it doesn't set business rates and in this case it can't offer rate relief.

Councillor Mazher Iqbal, cabinet member for business and investment, said: "We can control the rent and we have done everything we can to help with this because we want to support our businesses.

"We don’t want empty shops and we want to promote a vibrant city centre."

The Treasury, which sets the policy, says it recognises it's a tough time for high streets and over the next five years it will cut rates by £13bn.

Several former high schools and a library in Leeds are to be sold off in a move expected to generate £95m for the city council by 2022.

The former Matthew Murray School, in Holbeck, and Micklefield School are on a list of dozens of sites earmarked for sale, while some sites, including the former Wortley High School and Cardigan Road Library, have already been sold.

The former Holt Park District Centre (pictured), Otley Civic Centre and Abbey Mills, in Kirkstall, are also among those set to be disposed of by the authority.

A report set to go before council decision makers next week claims the authority would raise about £95m by selling the sites.

The report, which is due to be discussed on 7 January, states the sale of the "surplus property assets" will provide an "essential source of capital".
