    It's estimated more than a million people will stop eating animal products this month as part of Veganuary.

    The concept was started by Jane Land and her husband Matthew Glover in York in 2014.

    She said: "It seems so surreal to think that something we started in our kitchen has turned into this phenomenon."

    A Doncaster care home has been placed in ‘special measures’ after inspectors uncovered a raft of failings.

    Skellow Hall care home, on Cross Hill, was rated inadequate for safety and management by the Care Quality Commission and as requiring improvement for its care, responsiveness and effectiveness.

    Inspectors found six breaches of the Health and Social Care Act around low staffing, unsafe management of medicines, unkempt facilities and general health and safety of residents.

    The home is now under new management with the new manager, Alex Morton, saying things are improving.

    “Things at Skellow unfortunately declined due to poor managerial structure and organisation," he said.

    “We have myself as the new manager from November 2019 and I have restructured the management in the home and introduced some new roles to provide support to the management team and care team."

    The service is due to be reinspected within six months.

  3. Holocaust survivor Heinz Skyte dies aged 99published at 15:52 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2020

    Holocaust survivor Heinz Skyte has died aged 99, it has been announced.

    Mr Skyte set up home in Leeds in 1939 after fleeing Germany in the wake of Nazis-led attacks on Jewish homes and businesses on what became known as the "night of broken glass" or Kristallnacht.

    News of his death was announced by the Holocaust Exhibition and Learning Centre, external, based at the University of Huddersfield, who said their "beloved" Mr Skyte would be "sadly missed".

    Tributes have also been paid by Leeds United, who Mr Skyte, supported throughout his life in England.

    In a statement the club said: "It is with deep sadness that Leeds United have today learnt of the passing of lifelong Leeds United supporter and Holocaust survivor Heinz Skyte, at the age of 99.

    "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Heinz at this sad time."

    Barnsley have been charged by the Football Association after Stoke City's James McClean was allegedly subjected to sectarian abuse in the Championship game between the two sides in November.

    The Potters winger, 30, does not wear a poppy on his shirt for the games scheduled around Remembrance Day.

    McClean is from Londonderry, where in 1972 British soldiers shot civilian protestors during 'Bloody Sunday'.

    Barnsley have until Friday, 10 January to respond to the charge.

    They said in a statement:, external "Barnsley Football Club has a zero tolerance policy on any form of discrimination. As a club, we are saddened to have had this charge brought against us.

    "We will await and respect the outcome of the FA's charge against us before communicating further on this matter."

  5. Harrogate stabbing: Teens arrested for attempted murderpublished at 15:04 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2020

    A 13-year-old boy and two other teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a man was stabbed in Harrogate in the early hours of this morning.

    The 30-year-old man was attacked outside the Victoria Shopping Centre, on Station Parade, at about 04:40.

    North Yorkshire Police said he suffered serious injures to his face, back and leg and will require surgery.

    Three teenage boys, aged 16, 15 and 13, have been arrested in connection with the incident and are being held in police custody.

    Supt Steve Thomas said: "This is clearly an extremely serious incident and residents will naturally feel concerned about what has happened.

    "However, incidents like this are very rare in our town."

    The force said it will be increasing patrols in the area as a result of the incident.

    A demolition-threatened bandstand in Calderdale which is thought to be the only surviving example of its kind has been given protected status by Historic England.

    The bandstand in Centre Vale Park, Todmorden, described by the heritage organisation as "an unusual theatre type of bandstand", has been given a Grade II listing, external.

    Built in 1914, the bandstand has been repeatedly hit by vandalism and Calderdale Council’s Cabinet previously agreed to demolish the structure.

    But over 2,000 people subsequently submitted a petition calling for it to be saved.

    The bandstand has been unsafe to use for much of the last decade, but was previously used at events like Todmorden Carnival and for concerts with brass bands and other music.

    Campaign group Save Our Bandstand is asking the council to allow it to take ownership of the structure in a community asset transfer.

    Councillors have put the demolition on hold to give the group time to make a business plan.

    Leeds Trinity University says it's "incredibly shocked and saddened" at the death of student Isaiah Usen-Satchell, who died from stab wounds in Sheffield on New Year's Day.

    The 18-year-old joined the university in September to study business.

    Police said he suffered slash wounds and died as a result of an injury near his wrist after reports of a fight between a group of men in Sheffield on 1 January.

    In a statement on Twitter, the university said: "We are incredibly shocked and saddened at the sad loss of one of our students, Isaiah, who died.

    "He had such a presence on campus and in class. He was a real character with a big personality and will be deeply missed."

    A book of condolence for Mr Usen-Satchell will be open in the University Chapel.

    Bradford, Doncaster and Sheffield are among the worst cities in England for fly-tipping, new figures show.

    The three cities had a combined 70,000 fly-tipping incidents in the last two years, according to statistics compiled by a national recycling firm.

    The data has been released on the day said to be known as "fly-tipping Friday" - what's expected to be the worst day of the year for illegal rubbish dumping.

    Liverpool is the worst city for fly-tipping with more than 41,000 incidents, according to the statistics, but Bradford is in third place, Doncaster in fourth place and Sheffield in fifth.

    Bradford narrowly missed out on the title of "mattress mountain" with nearly 3,000 mattresses dumped in 2018-19, the report adds.

    A driverless electric shuttle service could be used to transport disabled people around York.

    The city is bidding for £4m to trial a scheme that would help blue badge holders access pedestrianised streets without having to drive into the city.

    Funding would come from Leeds City Region's Future Mobility Zone scheme which has been submitted for government approval.

    The scheme, which could improve access to the city for about 20,000 blue badge holders, would see people park on the outskirts and board an automated shuttle.

    Jackie Chapman, of the York and District MS Society, said getting around the medieval city centre poses difficulties for disabled people.

    "It's horrendous pushing a wheelchair in York because of the cobbles and narrow streets - wheelchairs are not sprung," she said.

    Leeds United captain Liam Cooper has said he "should know better" for swearing at a ball boy in a match against Fulham in December.

    The captain said the FA had brought the matter to his attention after Leeds were defeated 2-1.

    Mr Cooper said: "I was trying to get the ball back for a throw in the final moments of the game as we looked to equalise.

    "That isn't an excuse. I'm the captain of Leeds United - a role I take extremely seriously - and I should know better.

    The captain said he sent a Leeds United shirt and a pair of boots to Fulham FC to pass on to the boy.

    A man serving a five-year sentence for robbery at a Doncaster prison has now been on the run for more than a month, police say.

    Declan Taylor, 22, absconded from HMP Hatfield on 2 December, according to the South Yorkshire force.

    He is described as being of slim build, with short, shaven hair.

    Taylor has "Outlaw" tattooed on his left arm and "Dec" tattooed on his right arm.

    He has links to Rotherham and Doncaster.

    Anyone with information about his whereabouts is being asked to contact police.

    Lemurs at a wildlife park near Doncaster have been staying in the festive spirit as the new year dawns by playing with discarded Christmas trees.

    The trees have been given a new lease of life, enriching the reserve for the animals at Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

    Greg Clifton, team leader of the park's primates team, said: "Lemurs are so mischievous anyway, so they were transfixed with the trees which had been taken down elsewhere in the park."

    Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murdering a teenager who was stabbed to death in Sheffield on New Year's Day.

    Isaiah Usen-Satchell, 18, was taken to hospital after an altercation between a group of men on St Aidan's Road in the Norfolk Park area in the early hours of 1 January.

    He suffered slash wounds to his arms and legs and died as a result of an injury near his wrist, police said.

    A 22-year-old man from Rotherham and a 27-year-old man also from Rotherham were arrested overnight on suspicion of murder.

    Three men, two aged 18 and one aged 20, previously arrested on suspicion of murder have been released on bail, South Yorkshire Police said.

    Some Yorkshire Bank customers say they're facing difficulties after wages weren't processed by the bank, leaving them without money.

    One customer, Katy Kallagher, from North Yorkshire, who's on maternity leave with her 15-week-old baby, says the delay in payment has left her without money to pay for heating.

    She says she's been left "freezing cold" and with just 27p in her arranged overdraft.

    Ms Kallagher said she's due to pay her rent and council tax, but can't as her wages haven't gone into her account.

    She said: "Online banking works, but wages haven’t gone in. I contacted my place of work who said, 'Ah Yorkshire Bank is it? You’re not the first to call. Try ringing the bank'

    "So I have tried, but they are, of course, receiving a 'high volume of calls'."

    The bank has said it's aware "of an issue with payments being processed" and that it's investigating the reports "as a priority".

    Over £220,000 is to be given to councils across the Yorkshire and the Humber region in a bid to tackle criminal landlords.

    Councils including Hull and Bradford will receive a share of the funding which will be used to train and educate enforcement officers.

    They will then be used to take enforcement action against exploitative landlords and advise tenants of their housing rights.

    The government says more than 4.5m households privately rent, which is why it's wanting "good landlords to thrive and hard-working tenants across the country get the homes they deserve".
