    With just a few hours of the year left, we wanted to take a look back at 2019 - and pick some of the best photos from Yorkshire, as caught on camera by the Press Association.

    Below are some of our favourites from January to June:

    Below sees an angler competing in Europe's largest beach angling festival at the Paul Roggeman European Open Beach Championship in the East Riding of Yorkshire:

    As part of the RAF's Tornado farewell tour in February, several of the famous jets flew past the Tornado steam locomotive near Leeming Bar in North Yorkshire:

    Below, we see a member of the public standing in front the newly restored Butterfield Window at Cliffe Castle in Keighley.

    It followed the completion of a 10-year project to restore the window and staircase at the museum near Bradford:

    April saw a dress rehearsal for Zara, a huge outdoor theatre production featuring a giant baby at the landmark Piece Hall in Halifax:

  2. Road to be partially closed as gas leak work continuespublished at 11:19 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2019

    A Sheffield city centre road is to remain partially closed this week as work continues to tackle a gas leak.

    A large low pressure pipe on Norfolk Street, near the Crucible Theatre, is the cause of the problem, according to gas distribution firm Cadent.

    Its engineers are carrying out repairs which are expected to be completed later today, the company adds.

    Subsequent work to fill in the hole and repair the road is expected to be finished by Friday, with a partial road closure remaining in place until then, Cadent says.

  3. Yorkshire volunteer coastal wildlife project praisedpublished at 10:44 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2019

    A project to track whales and dolphins off the Yorkshire Coast has been praised in a new report.

    Volunteers saw 320 whales, dolphins and porpoises in the sea off Yorkshire this year, according to the Wildlife Trusts' Marine Review Of The Year.

    The organisation is a combination of 46 individual wildlife trusts around the country, each of which are charities run by members and volunteers.

    The Yorkshire project saw trained citizen scientists recording hundreds of individual sightings.

    Photographs captured a pod of bottlenose dolphins travelling from Scotland to Flamborough Head in East Yorkshire, the furthest south they had been officially identified.

    Researchers also logged minke whales feeding off Staithes, in North Yorkshire.

  4. Police appeal over 'stolen' flock of sheeppublished at 10:05 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2019

    The seizure of a flock of 63 sheep earlier this month has sparked a police appeal for help finding their owners.

    The sheep - a range of males and females of varying ages and breeds - were found by North Yorkshire Police on 10 December from land near Thirsk.

    Officers believe the sheep may have been stolen.

    Police are now asking anyone who may have information about these sheep, or who has had sheep stolen over the last 12 months, to get in touch.

    Anyone who suspects they've had sheep stolen is being asked to provide "as much detail and description of the livestock as possible", police add.

  5. Speeding M62 drivers urged to 'make our motorways safer'published at 09:22 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2019

    West Yorkshire motorway cop PC Martin Willis has tweeted pictures of just some of the speeds drivers have been caught travelling at on the M62 over the past few days.

  7. Warning over Sheffield city centre gas leakpublished at 08:36 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2019

    People in a part of Sheffield city centre are being warned not to operate any electrical appliances and not to smoke as work continues to deal with a gas leak.

    The leak, on Norfolk Street, is currently being dealt with by engineers.

    There's a strong smell of gas in the area and gas company Cadent is asking people not to do anything which could be a possible source of ignition.

    If you're making a journey on the rails in Yorkshire this Tuesday morning, most services to and from our main stations appear to be generally running on time.

    However:

    • The 08:21 York to Edinburgh service has been cancelled
    • The 09:09 Leeds to Nottingham service has been cancelled
    • The 09:35 Doncaster to Sheffield service has been cancelled

  9. Murder investigation in Batley after body foundpublished at 08:00 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2019

    A murder investigation's been launched in Batley after a body was found in a former bank in the town.

    The body was discovered on Sunday at an old bank on Commercial Street after officers forced entry to the building.

    Three people have since been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder, police say.

    Two have been released under investigation while the third has been bailed, officers add.

    Inquiries are continuing to confirm the identity of the dead person and the circumstances surrounding his death.

    A cordon remains in place at the scene this morning, police say.

  10. Watch: SpaceX satellites spotted in night skypublished at 17:00 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2019

    Stargazers were startled when they saw what appeared to be a new "constellation" in the night sky.

    The near-perfect line was in fact formed by the Starlink, satellites launched by Elon Musk's SpaceX company earlier this year.

    They were spotted across Derbyshire and the Peak District.

  11. Appeal as man missing from East Yorkshire spotted in Yorkpublished at 16:46 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2019

    Police "concerned" for a man missing from Pocklington in East Yorkshire for more than a week say he's been spotted in York.

    Nicholas Davies (pictured), 28, was first seen in York on 21 December.

    Since then there have been two further unconfirmed sightings of him, according to Humberside Police.

    Anyone who sees him is being asked to contact police.

  12. CCTV appeal over Sheffield armed robberypublished at 16:26 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2019

    Footage of a group of masked teenagers who robbed a shopkeeper at knife-point in South Yorkshire has been released by police in the hope of identifying them.

    At 16:30 on Friday 13 December, four masked white teenage boys entered the shop on St. Mary’s Lane, Ecclesfield, according to police.During the incident, a male member of staff was cut with a knife by one of the boys who demanded cash from the till and cigarettes.

    Officers are now appealing to anyone who saw the men pictured in the footage in and around St Mary’s Lane on 13 December to get in touch:

  13. Northern MD apologises after trains cancelledpublished at 15:56 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2019

    The managing director of rail company Northern has personally apologised after a member of the public complained about the "shambolic" service.

    Paul Downend, from Elsecar, emailed Northern's David Brown complaining about his son's cancelled journey home from Meadowhall.

    Mr Downend said after finishing work at 18:00 yesterday, two consecutive trains were cancelled, meaning there was no train until 20:54 - almost three hours later.

    However, he said his son left work early, meaning he caught the running 17:48 service, but said the service was "a shambles".

    Replying to the email, Mr Brown apologised, saying the cancellations were down to staff shortages after a "large amount sickness" at the Sheffield depot.

    He went on to say that he believed "rail travel here in the North...is no longer acceptable" but said "huge improvements", including the replacement of the controversial Pacer trains, were coming.

    A man wearing a mask, corset and stockings is being sought by police in North Yorkshire after it was reported he'd exposed himself.

    It happened on Croft Hill in Sutton-in-Craven, between Keighley and Skipton, at about 02:30 on Sunday 22 December, according to North Yorkshire Police.

    The man was wearing a blue and green corset, beige stockings and a mask covering his eyes, officers say.

    Anyone who can identify the man is being asked to contact police.

  15. Basketball match stopped after court too slippypublished at 14:50 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2019

    A basketball match in Sheffield had to be called off on Sunday because the court was too slippy.

    The game, between the Sheffield Sharks and Leicester Riders, saw players injure themselves by slipping on the floor, external.

    The Ponds Forge match saw just a quarter played before being postponed due to safety concerns for the players.

    BBC reporter Peter Spencer said it's believed the floor surface was deemed unsuitable because the wrong type of detergent had been used on the court.

    The match will be rearranged, according to Sheffield Sharks.

    A number of people have been injured in a crash on the A164 in East Yorkshire, police say.

    Three vehicles crashed on the road near to Bracey Bridge Farm near Ruston Parva.

  17. Man swallows earrings in Hull jewellery store heistpublished at 13:53 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2019

    A man swallowed two pairs of earrings during the theft of £13,000 worth of jewellery from a shop in Hull, police say.

    He also stole two diamond rings by putting them on his fingers before walking out of the store in the St Stephen's shopping centre on 23 December, according to Humberside Police.

    The haul included white gold diamond earrings and a platinum diamond ring.

    The force has issued a CCTV image of the suspect who "spoke with a southern accent".

  18. Police continue searching former bank in West Yorkshirepublished at 13:23 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2019

    A police search of a derelict bank in a West Yorkshire is into its second day, according to police.

    Officers from the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team arrived at the building in Commercial Street in Batley yesterday.

    Road closures have been put in place while the operation continues and there is "no risk to the public at this time", police say.

    More information about the nature of the seach will follow "in due course", the West Yorkshire force adds.

  19. Humberside Police chief praises injured officers' returnpublished at 12:56 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2019

    A chief constable has praised four officers who returned to duty despite being injured while responding to a domestic violence call.

    Humberside Police's Lee Freeman said he had spoken to the officers involved and described them as a "absolute credit" to the force.

    A 38-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault in Coltman Street, Hull, in the early hours of Sunday.

    The man has been released while inquiries continue, police said.

    In a tweet Mr Freeman said two of the officers suffered facial injuries, one had a suspected broken finger and another was kicked in the knee.

  20. Illegal detectorists sought over Roche Abbey damagepublished at 12:27 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2019

    Illegal metal detectorists are being hunted by police over a spate of criminal damage to a Grade II-listed medieval abbey in South Yorkshire.

    Ground workers found six holes dug in the grounds of Roche Abbey, in Maltby, near Rotherham.

    Police believe the damage at the site which is run by English Heritage occurred between 11 and 18 December.

    No CCTV footage is available so police have asked for anyone with information to call 101.
