Read MoreA work by world famous Wakefield artist Barbara Hepworth is one of three which have been gifted to the nation.
The bronze sculpture, called Orpheus (Maquette 1), will go on display at the Hepworth Wakefield gallery in February alongside a sculpture by Denis Mitchell and a painting by William Scott.
The three works were owned by collector Nancy Balfour, chairman and president of the Contemporary Art Society before her death in 1997, and given to the public by her niece through the Cultural Gifts Scheme
Hepworth's piece, from 1956, is one of four "Orpheus" works and is an early example of the artist's move from mostly carving in stone and wood, to her inclusion of bronze and brass.
Hepworth was born in Wakefield in 1903 and was one of the most highly regarded British sculptors of the 20th Century, along with Castleford-born Henry Moore.
She attended Leeds School of Art in the 1920s and opened a studio in St Ives, Cornwall, in 1949.
The artist and sculptor was made a CBE in the 1958 New Year Honours list and made a Dame in 1965. She died in a fire at her studio in 1975.

A plan to ban all private car journeys in the centre of York by 2023 and make the city's public transport so good that most residents won't need to own a car by that date has been supported by councillors.
The proposal would see a ban on all non-essential private car journeys "within the city walls" within the next three years.
The plans, raised at December's full council meeting, also include working with Blue Badge holders to ensure they can still get into the city, a ban on all non-essential cars from roads near primary schools at drop-off and pick-up times and working with businesses to make sure deliveries can continue.
City of York councillors voted in favour of the plans by a majority, with a number of Liberal Democrats abstaining from the vote and three other councillors voting against the move.
Labour councillor Jonny Crawshaw said: “This is about reducing and removing non-essential car journeys across the whole city, while improving the range and attractiveness of alternative travel options."
