    Police in North Yorkshire have defended a series of CCTV images released in connection with an attempted murder investigation after they were mocked by dozens of people on social media.

    The force issued four images earlier as part of its ongoing inquiry into an attack on a 43-year-old man in Little Holtby on 1 December.

    However, the images, taken from outside Club Amadeus, in Northallerton, have been criticised online with one person describing them as looking like they've been taken on a mobile phone "smothered in Vaseline".

    Responding to the comments the North Yorkshire force wrote on its Facebook page, external: "Wherever possible we use the highest quality CCTV, or clearest image available to us, in our appeals.

    "However, the quality of CCTV systems does vary, and unfortunately a clear image or video isn’t always captured.

    "It just takes one person to recognise a distinctive piece of clothing, hat or haircut, to give us that vital breakthrough and help us catch the culprits."

    The series has been nominated for the New Drama category.

    A second series has been commissioned, and Shibden Hall near Halifax has seen visitor numbers treble since it aired.

    New research has found clinically available cancer drugs could be used to treat people with lung disease.

    A research team from the University of Sheffield has been looking at how the drugs could help people with Chronic obstrictive pulmonary disease (COPD).

    People living with COPD experience a wide range of symptoms that have an increasing impact on their quality of life, including breathlessness, coughing and frequent chest infections.

    The damage to the lungs is driven by inflammation caused by immune cells called neutrophils.

    Tests carried out at the university identified a number of compounds in cancer drugs which speed up the death of the cells which cause the inflammation and promote healing in the lungs

    Dr Lynne Prince, Russell Fellow at the University of Sheffield, said: "The hope of these drugs is that they can clear the damaging cells from the lungs of people living with COPD, preventing any further damage and therefore the progression of the disease for the first time.”

    Parkland damaged during the UCI Road World Championships should be restored to its "former glory" by the end of the summer, according to the local council.

    The Stray, in Harrogate, was used as a spectator area during the event between 22 and 29 September, but was badly damaged after heavy rain battered the 200-acre site.

    Judy d'Arcy Thompson, chair of the Stray Defence Association, says she has been told it could take "two or three years" before it recovers.

    However, Harrogate Borough Council says it's doing all in can to repair the damage.

    Ben Grabham, from the council says: "We had the highest amount of rainfall for 50 years and the ground is saturated, but we're bringing in specialists and consultants to work on the area."

    "That work will start in the spring and come the summer we're confident the Stray will be looking something like its former self."

    Plans to cut £500,000 from the budget for Bradford’s museums and galleries have been delayed for a year as the city bids to be named UK City of Culture 2025.

    The council had planned to reduce the 2020/21 budget in a bid to meet savings targets imposed as a result of government funding cuts.

    However, a report due to go before the authority's Regeneration and Environment Scrutiny Committee, external says the Museums and Gallery service w ill play a major role in the culture bid.

    The proposed cuts had led to a series of strikes strikes from museum and library staff across the district.

    Police investigating the attempted murder of a man in North Yorkshire have released CCTV images from outside a Northallerton nightclub.

    The 43-year-old man, from Northallerton, was attacked in the early hours of the morning in the village of Little Holtby on 1 December.

    At the time North Yorkshire Police said he had been "critically injured" during the incident.

    A 25-year-old Catterick man has been charged with attempted murder.

    Police say they want to speak to the people in the images taken outside Club Amadeus at about 02:30.

    Anyone who can identify any of the individuals in the images is asked to contact police.

    Proposals to increase council tax in Leeds by 3.99% are being discussed by councillors today.

    A crackdown on litterbugs in Hull begins today with the introduction of £100 fines.

    Litter wardens will patrol the streets and hand out penalty notices to anyone aged over 18 caught dropping rubbish.

    Fines will be reduced to £80 if paid within seven days.

    The council say the revenue will be re-invested into environmental services.

    Councillor Anita Harrison, said: “There are more than 2,000 bins dotted around the city and we are fed-up with the selfish minority who spoil the city for everyone.

    “We hope the fines will deter people from littering, helping to make our city a tidy and cleaner place.”

    Hull City Council says it spends more than £2m on street cleaning, fly-tip removal and litter bin emptying every year, collecting more than 4,000 tonnes of rubbish in the process.

    A selection of bedroom musicians, indie bands and retro-futuristic soul singers were being tipped for success this year as part of the list.

    The winner is yet to be revealed, but Yungblud, real name Dominic Harrison, was named in third place.

    The 22-year-old has risen to fame with his first album 21st Century Liability, as well as having songs played on hit Netflix series 13 Reasons Why.

    A convicted murderer, serving a prison sentence for killing a Hull firefighter, has spoken in public for the first time about his role in the London Bridge terrorist incident in November.

    Steven Gallant, 42, told how he began to tackle Usman Khan armed only with a chair during the attack which began at a nearby prisoner rehabilitation event.

    Gallant, who was out on licence to attend the event, is serving a minimum of 17 years for killing ex-firefighter Barrie Jackson, 15 years ago.

    Khan, who killed Saskia Jones and Jack Merritt (right), was later shot dead by police.

    In his first interview since what he called "that tragic day", Gallant said he went to investigate after he heard noises from a lower floor of the building.

    "I could tell something was wrong and had to help," he told PA news agency.

    "I saw injured people. Khan was stood in the foyer with two large knives in his hands."

    "He was a clear danger to all, so I didn't hesitate."

    CCTV images have been released of a man police want to speak to following an attack on a police officer in York city centre.

    North Yorkshire Police say the officer was assaulted on 29 December while police were dealing with an incident.

    Anyone who recognises the man in the images is being urged to come forward.

    Yesterday the North Yorkshire force said there had been "shocking numbers" of assaults on police officers and staff during the first week of 2020.

    Two men have been charged with assault after two police officers were attacked in Sheffield.

    The officers were attacked on 2 January while investigating reports of shoplifting in the Abbey Lane area of Sheffield, according to South Yorkshire Police.

    One of the officers was taken to hospital with minor injuries, both are now recovering at home.

    William Eades, 27, of Roxton Road in Sheffield has been charged with assaulting an emergency services worker and Jamie Young, 32, of Norton Park Road, has been charged with assault and one count of theft.

    Both men appeared at Sheffield Magistrates' Court and were bailed until 10 January.

    The UK's fourth largest supermarket group, Morrisons, has said its sales fell over the Christmas period amid "challenging" trading conditions.

    The Bradford-based retailer reported a 1.7% fall in like-for-like sales - which strip out the impact of new stores - excluding fuel, for the 22 weeks to 5 January.

    It said the "customer uncertainty of the last year was sustained".

    Morrisons is the first of the big four chains to report Christmas sales, with Sainsbury's and Tesco due this week.

    On Monday, discount chain Aldi said that its total UK sales in the four weeks to 24 December rose 7.9% from a year before, although it did not give a like-for-like comparison.

    A University of Leeds student convicted of 159 sex offences, including 136 rapes, will "never be safe to be released", a judge has said.

    Reynhard Sinaga was found guilty of luring 48 men from outside Manchester clubs to his flat, where he drugged and assaulted them - filming the attacks.

    Police say they have evidence Sinaga, 36, who is being named for the first time, targeted at least 190 victims.

    The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said Sinaga was "the most prolific rapist in British legal history".

    Sinaga, who was studying for a PHD at the University of Leeds, carried out his attacks over several years.

    The rapist was caught in June 2017 when one victim, who regained consciousness while being assaulted, fought Sinaga off and called the police.

    The judge ruled his life sentence must include a minimum of 30 years in jail.
