  3. Op Duxford: At the roadside with South Yorkshire Policepublished at 10:40 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2020

I’m out with South Yorkshire Police officers this morning during what's known as Operation Duxford.

    A stopped van

It’s not just speeding drivers which officers are stopping as part of the initiative - though that's a major focus.

One van driver was stopped on the M18 after he was found to have no insurance.

Both marked and undercover cars are being used as part of the operation

PC Sophie Drinkall, from South Yorkshire Police, tells me: "We missed this morning’s briefing because we’ve already stopped two vehicles for speeding.

"It turns out this van here [pictured] did have insurance," she added.

  4. Anglo American offers lifeline for North Yorkshire minepublished at 10:26 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2020

Mining company Anglo American has said it will step in to save a £4bn potash mine project in North Yorkshire which promises to be Britain's largest in decades.

The firm has made a £405m bid to buy the shares of Sirius Minerals, a move which may safeguard thousands of jobs Sirius claims it could create in the area.

Earlier this month, Anglo American said it was in advanced talks about a possible offer of 5.5p per share.

It would value Sirius Minerals at £386m, but mean a significant loss for thousands of smaller shareholders.

The future of the mine, at Boulby, near Staithes, has been in doubt after Sirius failed to raise cash to unlock funding.

The mine would extract polyhalite, a naturally occurring fertiliser which is used in agriculture, from a mile underground the North York Moors National Park.

The extracted mineral would be transported on a conveyor belt through a 23-mile (37km) tunnel to Teesside, from where it would be shipped to customers.

The mine had been expected to open in 2021 and create 1,000 jobs, although Sirius Minerals slowed construction work at the end of 2019 due to its funding problems.

Delays continue on the M1 southbound in South Yorkshire between J36 Tankersley and J35A near Stocksbridge following an earlier accident.

Traffic remains very heavy on all approaches to J36 (pictured), with vehicles being diverted via the A61 and A616.

Police have confirmed that the crash happened at about 05:30 and involved a vehicle and a pedestrian.

Delays are expected to continue "for some time" and drivers are being asked by police to avoid the area if at all possible.

  6. HS2: Rail link costs could rise to £106bn, says reviewpublished at 09:47 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2020

Building the high-speed rail link HS2 could cost up to £106bn, a government-commissioned review has said.

The unpublished report, seen by the Financial Times, external, says there is "considerable risk" that estimated costs could rise by another 20%.

In 2015, HS2 - a branch of which would run from London through South Yorkshire to Leeds, with a branch running into North Yorkshire - was set to cost £56bn.

The review also recommends pausing the second phase of the project while experts look at whether conventional lines could help link Birmingham to Manchester and Leeds instead.

Some £8bn has already been spent on the project, which will connect London, the Midlands and northern England using trains capable of travelling at 250mph.

BBC transport correspondent Tom Burridge said that "on balance", the review recommends the government should proceed with the project, but he added this "is hardly a ringing endorsement".

The collision happened at about 05:30 this morning between J36 and J35A, leading to major rush-hour delays (pictured) and traffic being turned around near the scene.

The M1 is expected to remain closed "for some time" as investigations continue at the scene, according to South Yorkshire Police.

Traffic is being diverted via the A61 and the A616, but there are also problems on the latter route after a multi-vehicle crash between A628 Flouch Roundabout and Mortimer Road at Midhopestones.

Drivers are being asked by police to avoid the area completely if at all possible.

  8. Police target South Yorkshire's speederspublished at 09:08 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2020

    BBC Yorkshire Live

I'm with police officers in South Yorkshire this morning who have begun an operation targeting speeding drivers in the county.

    Officers at the briefing

Operation Duxford is an initiative focusing on one specific issue.

Speeding was chosen as the issue to tackle following a public poll, the force said.

Supt Paul McCurry tells me: “Our primary focus today is around education, but we are out on our road network and we are visible.

"We want to demonstrate to the community that we take their complaints seriously.”

  9. Major delays continue on M1 southbound after accidentpublished at 09:00 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2020

Congestion is as far back as J37, with delays currently running at about 40 minutes.

Traffic caught in the area is being turned around and released, but there is very heavy congestion on all approaches to J36.

Traffic is being diverted via the A61 and A616.

However, the A616 is also closed in both directions due to a multi-vehicle accident between A628 (Flouch Roundabout) and Mortimer Road (Midhopestones).
