    A five-year-old girl who went from a "happy-go-lucky little girl to being really conscious" after she was diagnosed with alopecia has regained her confidence thanks to the work of a specialist hair technician.

    Harper, from Leeds, was left with a prominent bald patch at the top of her head after being diagnosed in 2018.

    But, thanks to the work of Ashley Marie Higgins, she has now got her confidence back.

    A new market in Bradford city centre will be named Darley Street Market after it was chosen by over half of respondents in a council poll.

    The new £21m market, on the site of the former Marks and Spencer in Darley Street, is due to open in 2022.

    Bradford Council said 1,200 people had their say on the name, with over 50% backing Darley Street Market while about 20% wanted to call it Bradford Market.

    Once opened, Oastler Market will be closed and demolished to make way for a housing development. Kirkgate Market will also close.

    Kier Construction has been announced as the main contractor selected to build the market.

    Did you witness a collision in Middleton, Leeds, in November? Police are re-appealing for information after Kathleen Bichard, 75, died in the crash.

    A silver Vauxhall Vivaro van reversed on New Forest Way and collided with Ms Bichard at about 17:30 on 4 November. She died later in hospital.

    PC Mark Turner said: "It is important for those involved in this collision and their families that we do all we can to establish the circumstances of what has taken place."

    Anyone who saw what happened, or who has information about the collision, is being asked to get in touch with West Yorkshire Police.

    West Ham are trying to conclude a £20m-plus deal to sign forward Jarrod Bowen from Championship club Hull City.

    Crystal Palace had appeared favourites to sign Bowen, one of the most highly-rated players outside the top-flight.

    But West Ham, desperate to reinforce David Moyes' squad for a battle to avoid the drop, have edged in front.

    It has been suggested West Ham have arranged a medical for Friday lunchtime but club sources have said the deal is still not done.

    Bowen, 23, has scored 16 goals this season for Hull City, who are 13th in the Championship.

    The priorities of passengers must "form the foundations" of new rail firm Northern Trains, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has said.

    Mr Shapps announced on Wednesday that troubled rail company Northern will be taken into government control from 1 March after a series of failures with the rail firm's services.

    Speaking at a meeting with Network Rail staff in York this morning, Mr Shapps said: "The new public sector operator has been tasked with delivering a new vision for the North’s railways, restoring confidence for passengers and delivering tangible improvements.

    “Meeting with local leaders, there is clear agreement that the priorities of passengers must form the foundations for the 100-day action plan I have requested.

    “There are no quick fixes, but this is an important step towards a new future where the North takes back control of its railways.”

    Two people from the same family who have tested positive for coronavirus in the UK are understood to have been staying at a hotel in Yorkshire.

    The two patients were taken overnight to a specialist centre in Newcastle, according to chief medical officer for England Professor Chris Whitty.

    An outbreak investigation team has been formed to trace anyone who has had contact with the pair to prevent the illness spreading.

    Sharon Peacock, director for national infection service at Public Health England Professor, said: "What they'll be doing is aiming to contact everybody who has been in contact with these two cases and prevent onward transmission."

    At least 213 people in China have died from the virus, mostly in Hubei, with almost 10,000 cases nationally.

    There have been 98 cases of the virus in another 18 countries.

    A woman has died after the car she was travelling in was involved in a hit-and-run crash in Rotherham.

    The 75-year-old woman was a passenger in a grey Mercedes when it was hit by a blue and silver Scania HGV on the A57 Worksop Road near to the Todwick roundabout. The lorry failed to stop.

    South Yorkshire Police said the woman and a 76-year-old man who was driving the car were left "shaken" by the incident but that later the same day the woman was taken ill and died.

    The force said the lorry, which was carrying a green shipping container, carried on towards the motorway.

    Officers investigating the crash are keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have dash-cam footage of the incident.

    A World War One memorial in Hull has been vandalised.

    Humberside Police say vandals smashed the glass on the Sharp Street Roll of Honour last night.

    The memorial remembers 142 men who signed up to fight in 1914, and is one of a few remaining street shrines in the city.

    It was taken down and put in to storage in 2012 before being restored and returned to Sharp Street two years later.

    The force has appealed for anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

    An inquest into the death of a rugby player who collapsed and died during a training session has been adjourned.

    Doncaster Knights prop Ian Williams died in 2018 aged 27.

    The inquest, which began on Monday, heard he had been diagnosed with a congenital heart condition at school but was told he could still play rugby.

    He went to hospital in February 2018 with "cardiac symptoms" but was sent home and advised to take Ibuprofen.

    Five days later, Mr Williams, who had previously played for the Rotherham Titans, collapsed and died despite his teammates carrying out CPR on him.

    The inquest had been due to conclude today but has now been adjourned to 17 February.

    The family of toddler who died earlier this month has thanked the public for donations towards his funeral in Doncaster.

    More than £4,500 has been donated towards the cost of Keigan O’Brien's funeral and supporting his siblings.

    The two-year-old was taken to hospital after police were called to a house in Bosworth Road, Adwick, at about 11:00 on 8 January.

    He was believed to be in cardiac arrest and died the next day from head injuries.

    A family spokesperson said: “Thank you for all of the fundraising that has been done for Keigan.

    "It is a very difficult time for us and we appreciate everyone’s time and efforts."

    Sarah O'Brien, 32, and her partner Martin Currie, 36, both of Bosworth Road, have been charged with murdering Keigan and are due to go on trial in October.

    There are plans to boost tourism on the Yorkshire coast by commemorating a famous 18th Century naval battle between American and British warships.

    The Battle of Flamborough Head saw American warship the Bonhomme Richard sunk by the British Navy on 23 September 1779.

    John Paul Jones, the captain of the American vessel, had ordered his boat to open fire on two British ships during the War of Independence.

    It was the one and only offshore fight between the US and British navies in English waters.

    Remains of the wreckage were found in 2018.

    Business and civic leaders are due to meet in Filey later to discuss how commemorating that battle could attract more tourists to the Yorkshire coast.

    Police have accused motorists of using the M62 like a "race track" after one driver was caught driving at almost twice the speed limit.

    The driver was stopped at 01:47 today after being caught driving at 138mph through West Yorkshire.

    Writing on Twitter, the officer known as Motorway Martin said: "Treating the M62 like a race track will, at best, end up with an appearance before a magistrate. At worst, result in a fatality."

    It follows another incident on Thursday, where the same officer clocked a driver doing speeds of 131mph.

    The government's official review into HS2 "strongly advises against cancelling" the project, the BBC can reveal.

    It also says only building one section of the line which will link southern and northern England "doesn't make sense".

    The BBC has read the full and final version of the report, which was led by former HS2 chairman Douglas Oakervee.

    The government will announce its final decision on the scheme next month.

    HS2 is designed to link London, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds, cutting overcrowding on the railways and helping to rebalance the UK's economy.

    But the project has faced criticism from both Labour and Conservative MPs for being over budget and behind schedule.

    In the summer, the government commissioned an independent review on whether it should go ahead - although opponents later warned it would be a whitewash.

    According to the review, the project could now cost up to double the official 2015 estimate of £56bn.

    Police have issued an appeal for help to find an 83-year-old man who went missing from his home in Sheffield in the early hours of this morning.

    Barry Mcilveen, who has Alzheimer’s, left his home in the Fulwood area on foot at about 02:15.

    Mr Mcilveen is described as being about 5 ft 9” tall. He was wearing navy corduroy trousers, a navy padded GAP jacket and a flat cap and is believed to be carrying a Decathlon rucksack.

    South Yorkshire Police have appealed for anyone who sees him to get in touch.
