Four long-standing stars of the York panto scene who were told their their contracts would not automatically be renewed have been found a new home to strut their stuff on stage.
York Theatre Royal's executive director Tom Bird told Martin Barrass, David Leonard, Suzy Cooper and AJ Powell this year's panto would be the last in its current format.
The stars were told they wouldn't automatically have a place in the new version of the show planned for Christmas 2020.
Now, the cast, including York panto legend Berwick Kaler (pictured), who retired a year ago after 40 years as Britain's longest serving Dame, will reunite in December to perform in Dick Turpin Rides Again.
Mr Kaler appeared on stage at the end of the final night of this year's panto, Sleeping Beauty, to give the Theatre Royal three days to reconsider its decision to shake up next year's pantomime.
Speaking on his casting at the Grand Opera House, he said: “Qdos Entertainment have come to the rescue of the most lauded pantomime in the country, having found us a new home at the Grand Opera House in our beloved city of York."

The market dates back to 1857 and named Britain's Favourite Market in 2016 and 2017.
However, it has been a turbulent time for the Leeds City Council-run market, with visitor numbers falling over the past few years.
The council says the deficit prediction follows £230,000 in rent reductions given to the stall-holders this year.
A spokesperson said: "We are also open to having a conversation with any trader experiencing hardship and considering further targeted rent reductions to help traders navigate the changing retail climate."
Anthony Lee, who owns a game card stall on the site, said: "Rents have not risen, but the footfall has fallen, so overall people are doing worse than they were 10 years ago.
"Some traders have had to let staff go - they've done the hard work while it seems the management and council have not taken that approach", he added.
The council says it has given stall-owners time for feedback.
North Yorkshire Police's appeal received thousands of replies from "quick-witted" Facebook users.
