  18. New lease of life for 230-year-old Denby Dale Pie Hallpublished at 17:32 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2020

A 230-year-old community centre in Huddersfield which is home to the famous Denby Dale Pie has been saved, for now at least, after a successful campaign.

The Denby Dale Pie Hall goes back to 1788, when villagers baked a pie to celebrate the recovery of King George from one of his bouts of mental illness.

The hall, on Wakefield Road, was at risk of closure last year after the number of bar customers plummeted.

But a campaign saw the social club being transformed into an attraction hosting memorabilia, ephemera and photographs.

The 150-capacity function hall has also now received a donation from a well-wisher: a rare Victorian pie plate dating from 1896 which will be raffled.

Will Simpson, a Labour councillor for Denby Dale, says: “We have held community events in recent weeks and a lot of people turned up.

"The community has really rallied behind the venue. It’s sustainable at the moment. Obviously it’s survived and things are looking up, but it’s still not out of the woods.”
