"All we seemed to do was just watch him seize. Then he'd stop and we'd wait for the next seizure. It was really hard. It was very different to what life is like now."

Kirklees Council says the Cemetery Road plots in Birkby are temporary, despite them being used since 1935.

The council wants the land for playing fields and a car park for the new £9.7m Brambles Primary Academy.

Allotment holders successfully argued in the High Court last year that planners should have first applied for a change of use of the land.

The legal case to save the allotments began in November 2018, but allotment holders said they had been dealing with the planning department for "at least two years" before that.

The council is returning to the High Court to appeal against last year's ruling.

Allotments group spokeswoman Debby Fulgoni (pictured) has described the last few months as “frustrating and exhausting”.

But Labour councillor Graham Turner said: “We feel, as an authority with responsibilities to those we support and care for, that we must continue this fight.”
