The student, and one of their relatives, tested positive for coronavirus after falling ill at Staycity Aparthotel in Paragon Street on Wednesday.

They are both being treated at the specialist infectious diseases unit at Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary.

In a statement the University of York said the student was not in the Vita Student block, which is also used by students from York St John University, when they came into contact with the virus but "did return to their room on one occasion and stayed overnight".

A spokesman said: "During this brief period the student did not meet other residents or staff at the building, or make use of the communal facilities.

"Public Health England confirms while this is new information, it does not change their risk assessment of 'low', and that there is negligible risk of onward transmission of the virus.

"We would like to reassure the students at Vita Student that PHE has stressed that they are not at risk and no further precautionary measures are necessary.

"There are no restrictions of any kind to students' ability to come and go from their apartments, and to attend all classes and seminars as normal."

The application also includes plans to create new internal walkways within the tower, adding a handrail beside the stairs up the 12th Century tower and resting points for visitors on the way up.

The plans have been submitted to the City of York Council following a public consultation held last year.

Previous proposals to develop the site, which included a visitor centre at the base of the mound, were rejected with objectors claiming it resembled a toilet block.

English Heritage withdrew those plans in 2018 due to the opposition.

Clifford's Tower sits atop the earthwork mound raised by William the Conqueror in 1068.

The stone tower was built later in the 12th Century. It was once the keep and chief strongpoint of York Castle, a medieval royal fortress.

  6. Theme park plans for Scarborough Futurist site in doubtpublished at 17:13 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2020

Scarborough Council could be set to abandon plans to build a theme park on the site of the town's former Futurist theatre.

Flamingo Land was appointed as the preferred bidder for the site following the council committing more than £4m to demolish the landmark theatre building (pictured above before its demolition in 2018) which once hosted the biggest stars in the country, including the Beatles.

The Ryedale-based theme-park operator had wanted to build a coastal attraction on the land, but following an independent review the authority will now look again at what it wants on the seafront.

A cross-party group will be established to look at all the options open to the council for the former Futurist and Scarborough Town Hall sites.

Flamingo Land will still be part of the negotiations, but it could be the end of its plans for an attraction which included a 60m-high “cliffhanger” ride, a rollercoaster, and a four-storey building housing restaurants and play areas.

The review into the council’s decision process found the project lacked “a clear link back to inclusive growth and expected benefits, such as better jobs, training, economic impact on the town”.

The review also found concerns over the business case for the council’s decision and the financial benefits.

The full review will go before the council’s cabinet when it meets on Tuesday 11 February.

Correspondence delivered last week to Catalans warning them of legal action was sent by Hull KR's owner.

In an email obtained by the BBC, Neil Hudgell wrote to the Dragons to put them "on notice" if his club suffered "financial loss" due to the signing of Folau.

He said: "I reserve my position to take proceedings v Catalans Dragons."

Folau, who was sacked by Rugby Australia for homophobic social media posts in April 2019, has signed a one-year deal with the Dragons.

The 30-year-old's was dismissed for saying "hell awaits" gay people, after previously being warned over his social media posts.

The skull and bones of Martin Radford, 57, were discovered in a field at Swaithe, near Barnsley, on 4 February 2018.

Now, South Yorkshire Police is renewing its appeal for information.

Det Insp Rob Platts said: "We know that up to late 2014 he was living in the Kingstone area of Barnsley.

"Therefore, a key focus of today’s appeal and what I want to ask the public for help with is understanding how Martin came to be in the Swaithe area. Had he moved to the area? Was he staying there?"

In 2018, Sheffield Coroners' Court heard he was identified via a DNA sample but, despite extensive investigation, no cause of death could be determined.

However, coroner Steven Eccleston said there was "no evidence of foul play".

Mr Radford was last seen alive on 27 March 2015.

An inquest heard how children playing on farmland off Mitchell's Street had discovered Mr Radford's skull in an overgrown area at the edge of the field.

Anyone with information is being asked to contact the South Yorkshire force.

Wetherspoons was granted planning permission last November to renovate the Elinor Lupton Centre on the former site of Leeds Girls’ High School in Headingley Lane, and is now seeking permission to serve alcohol on the site.

But, as part of negotiations with Leeds City Council’s licensing department, Wetherspoons confirmed it would not allow entry to participants of the "Otley Run" pub crawl, due to concerns over anti-social behaviour.

The Otley Run has long been a favourite with Leeds students, running along numerous pubs and bars from Far Headingley all the way down Otley Road into Leeds city centre.

The licensing hearing for the building will take place later.
