The rock group played at the packed University of Leeds refectory on 14 February 1970 and recorded the gig.

The record it spawned, Live at Leeds, is often cited as one of the best live rock albums of all time.

The drain, at a large property in Thornton Road, was left uncovered after the recent bad weather and the badger had got stuck in its 2ft wide opening, the animal charity says.

RSPCA officer John Greaves, who was called to the property, said: "The drain had only been opened earlier in the day so luckily she hadn't been down there too long and wasn't injured.

"I managed to lift her out and check her over so, released her there and then. She scurried off - she knew exactly where she was going and was obviously in a rush."

Following the rescue, the RSPCA says anyone finding injured or trapped wild animals should take extra care.

Mr Greaves said: "Badgers are beautiful creatures, but they have sharp claws and a mouth full of teeth.

"They can scratch and bite when they're distressed or in pain, so it's really important to keep a safe distance and call for help if you find one in need of assistance."

Network Rail advised passengers to expect disruption on many routes due to flooding and allow more time for their journeys.

Passenger director Jake Kelly said: "Storm Ciara dumped a month-and-a-half of rain on us last weekend, leaving ground waterlogged and rivers swollen.

"We had a lot of flooding in the North West and a lot of it disrupted the railway, for example at Todmorden and Caldew near Carlisle.

"With Storm Dennis set to bring more high winds and further rainfall this Saturday and Sunday, we're preparing for more of the same."

Meanwhile the AA is urging motorists to take extra care.

Patrolman Ben Sheridan said: "The forecast looks bleak across the UK with warnings for wind and heavy rain which will significantly reduce visibility on the roads.

"For those who are braving the storm, drivers should make sure they account for the conditions. Slow down, allow for greater stopping distances and watch out for potential hazards."

Shabir Pandor, leader of Kirklees Council, says: "In extreme cases like this all of the resource we have goes into ensuring people are safe – with our priority always the most vulnerable in the borough.

“As a council, our key role in emergencies like this is to do everything we can to make sure our hardworking emergency services can get to where they need to be, so vulnerable people get the help they need.
