Peter Turner (pictured), 80, of Redcar, was jailed for more than 20 years after he pleaded guilty to 14 sexual offences committed against three boys aged under 13.

The offences took place at Ampleforth College, North Yorkshire, and a parish in Cumbria between 1984 and 1990.

Tim Swift was speaking after a visit from then Environment Minister Theresa Villiers to Hebden Bridge on Wednesday, where about 500 homes and 600 businesses were hit by Storm Ciara.

Mr Swift says the council, volunteers and the Environment Agency are working as hard as they can, to help flood-hit areas like Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd.

But he says: "The council simply doesn't have the resource or money to do everything we would want to.

"After Boxing Day 2015 the government provided us with funding so we were able to offer immediate grants to homeowners and businesses.

"We need to repeat that level of support again and we need to know it's there now so people can get help and support straight away."

On a visit to the Calder Valley yesterday, Ms Villiers, who was Environment Secretary until being sacked earlier today, has said the area was already getting £74m as part of a programme of flood investment.

The government and other agencies must "pick up the pace" over flood defences in the Calder Valley, she added.

  13. Hull listed mural delays redevelopment plan by six monthspublished at 16:29 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2020

Work has almost ground to a halt inside Hull’s former BHS building as a result of a Grade II listed mural.

    Three Ships Mural

The 1963 Three Ships mural depicting Hull's fishing heritage was granted listed status in November last year.

It comprises almost one million pieces of Italian glass on a 66ft by 64ft (20m x 19m) concrete screen and depicts three stylised trawlers spelling out Hull with their masts.

The council said it wanted to knock it down after "dangerously high levels of asbestos" were found.

But the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport said the mosaic was of "special architectural and historic interest".

The council now says it can’t progress any major work inside or on nearby land, over fears tiles could be dislodged or asbestos could be unsettled.

The local authority plans a £130m redevelopment of the site including building a new Ice Arena, houses, offices, a car park and shops.

A survey is set to begin to establish whether the mural can be saved, setting the whole scheme back six months.

First elected in 2015 he has a huge 27,000 majority in Richmond.

He worked in finance for Goldman Sachs before entering Parliament and is a big supporter both of Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the campaign to leave the EU.

The big question is, with a budget less than a month away, will having a Yorkshire MP as chancellor mean big spending up here?

The government will see it as a good PR move to have a Yorkshire MP in Number 11, and with some fairly large projects looking nearly budget ready, he might have some things up here to announce.
