  8. Mumps cases hit 10-year high in Englandpublished at 14:08 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2020

Health officials are urging people to have both parts of the MMR vaccine after cases of mumps in England reached their highest level in a decade.

Outbreaks in universities and colleges raised the number of cases of the painful viral illness to 5,042 in 2019 - four times the number in 2018.

Most were in young adults who missed out on the MMR jab.

Public Health England said the full two doses of the vaccination were needed to maximise protection.

The vaccine prevents most cases of mumps - but not all, and so some young people are still getting the illness.

Olly Finch, a student at Leeds University, said: "I went to bed normal, everything fine, and then I woke up, and bang - my face was so puffed out, so swollen.

Yorkshire miner Sirius Minerals says talks with financial investors to raise $680m (£521.9m) have fallen through, putting the company at the risk of going into administration.

Up to 85,000 small investors sank cash into the Sirius Mineral development near Whitby before it ran into financial difficulty last year.

The North Yorkshire polyhalite mine is the UK's biggest mining project.

"The board confirms that the company has not been able to secure an institutional anchor investor willing to provide sufficient support for the alternative proposal which was part of the consortium's requirements," Sirius said in a statement.

  12. York food bank voucher use up by 22% in three-year periodpublished at 12:30 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2020

According to the City of York Council report, a total of 4,026 food vouchers were claimed across the city in 2018, compared to 3,281 in 2015 – a rise of 22.7%.

The report says in-work poverty is on the rise, which it says is a “strange phenomenon” because the minimum wage has increased.

The report's authors say they believe the loss of in-work benefits is causing problems for people.

And councillors say they fear the “stigma” of going to food banks, or claiming free school meals for their children, means struggling families in York aren't getting as much support as they need.

The report adds: “We did not see the notion of food poverty in York before 2010 and there were no food banks in the city at that time.

"However, food poverty is now recognised in local communities in reaction to national reductions in welfare benefits and could be attributed to the £30bn cuts in working age social security still being rolled out.”

Councillor Martin Rowley said: “I think there is a social responsibility on the council to alleviate poverty within the city.”

City of York Council's food poverty committee will now make recommendations on how poverty can be eased, which will then be presented to senior councillors.
