  10. Police officers endure a dozen more Covid-19 assaultspublished at 15:46 British Summer Time 29 April 2020

Police officers and staff in West Yorkshire have been coughed or spat at on 12 occasions over the last week by people claiming to have coronavirus.

The force's deputy chief constable Russ Foster said the attacks were a severe hindrance to the public health effort.

In total, there have been 33 Covid-19 related assaults since the pandemic - 30 of which were on officers and three on detention staff.

Seven of those arrested have since been jailed.

The force said most of the assaults happened when a suspect had been arrested for another offence, after which they had either coughed or spat at the officer while being arrested or when in custody.

Mr Foster said the attacks were "wholly unacceptable" and had caused distress to the officers.

He said: "Policing is a difficult enough job at the moment and officers and staff worry whether they might pick up the virus and may be taking it home to their loved ones.

"While we are taking whatever precautions we can, these attacks clearly heighten the risk and cause increased distress."

Volunteer James Sanderson bought Bessy from Selby a second-hand walking frame after she told him how long she'd been housebound.

Mr Sanderson set up the community group Barlby Region Independent Group Helpers Together (BRIGHT) at the beginning of March, anticipating the vulnerable might suffer in lockdown.

He co-ordinates a team of 45 people, delivering about 20 packed lunches and 40 hot meals to people every day.

He told the BBC he met Bessy after he delivered a Sunday lunch to a couple in Barlby a few weeks ago, and they asked if he could visit her home as they had been unable to see her as usual because of lockdown.

He said: "She said she used to go out with a friend about six years ago, but she said she hasn't been out of the house for six years."

After buying Bessie a walking aid, he said: "She couldn't believe it.

"With her visits, she's always smiling," he added.

The discovery was made last Friday at the Pitsmoor Hotel on Pitsmoor Road, which has since been closed after a prohibition notice was served by police and the city council.

The licence holder had already been served a prohibition notice for another pub, The Staffordshire Arms on Sorby Street, under legislation introduced due to the the coronavirus pandemic, police say.

John O'Malley, liquor licensing manager at South Yorkshire Police, says: "Licences for both venues are now under review by ourselves and Sheffield City Council, so there could be long-term implications for these businesses."

Councillor Bob Johnson said: "While I'm heartened by the sacrifices the vast majority of individuals and responsible businesses are making during this lockdown period, it seems some appear to believe they can ignore the regulations and in doing so risk spreading the virus.

"In these cases, as we have shown here, we will follow up on complaints and take firm action," he added.
