Crashes involving cyclists in North Yorkshire have risen as more people take to their bikes during the lockdown, police say.

The number of collisions with cyclists has gone up from 20% to 27%, compared to the same period last year.

North Yorkshire Police said the rise coincided with an increase in excessive traffic speeds.

The force has urged both cyclists and drivers to take extra care on the roads.

Sgt Kirsten Aldridge said: “We’ve seen a lot more cyclists using our roads recently, from young families and novices to experienced riders. The number of collisions involving cyclists has also sadly risen during this time.

“But if drivers and cyclists remember to share the road and stick to the rules this weekend, their risk of being involved in a serious crash can be significantly reduced.”

What started out as a "fun activity to do with the children" during lockdown quickly became a community highlight.

Alfie has been photographed doing a number of lockdown activities, including a "trip" to the seaside, homeschooling and even recreating Captain Tom Moore's £30m fundraising walks.

With scenes recreated in the front garden of Mike and Hayley Stones' Totley home, people going on their walks were treated to a daily activity.

Hayley said: "Alfiebear’s daily lockdown activities in the garden have made both children and adults alike smile as they walk past.

"I thought, 'How could I turn this into fundraising for the NHS?' as they are really needing our support right now during these really difficult times."

Almost £1,000 has been raised for the NHS, with people thanking the family for "bringing so much fun and so many smiles to people's faces in this rubbish time", one supporter said.
