1. Complaints over 'stink' from former East Yorkshire tippublished at 14:40 British Summer Time 25 June 2020

Residents in part of East Yorkshire say their quality of life is being severely damaged by ongoing problems caused by a nearby former tip.

City Plant, which ran the waste facility at Newport, near Gilberdyke, was fined after failing to meet conditions of their environmental permit and it was closed in 2013.

The site is currently being repurposed and landscaped, but as that work takes place, the smell is back, according to people who live nearby.

Roy Hunt, from the parish council, said: "The stink we have now is very very similar to what they were importing in 2014.

"It's basically substandard compost that hasn't been properly composted. It's similar - but worse - from what you get from a farmer's muck-spreading, except it's 24 hour, seven days a week as they're operating the site."

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said: "We have received seven reports across the last five weeks concerning odours at Gilberdyke Landfill.

"We are investigating these reports and have notified the contractors concerned."

The government announced earlier this week that providing social distancing rules are followed, some venues will be allowed to reopen from 4 July.

Sea Life, which has a site in Scarborough, has said it will reopen with "extensive measures" in place to keep people and animals safe.

Temperature checks, pre-booked time slots and enhanced cleaning throughout the day are some of the measures being implemented, along with the social distancing guidelines.

The cases are at the Kober factory in Cleckheaton - a supplier to Asda - where the whole workforce has now been offered testing, according to Kirklees Council.

These positive cases are being followed up by the NHS Test and Trace programme and those affected are being advised to self-isolate for seven days, a joint statement from the council, Public Health England and Kober says.

Anyone identified as being a close contact of a positive case at the factory is being advised to self-isolate for 14 days.

Rachel Spencer-Henshall, director of public health at Kirklees Council, said: "I’d like to thank Kober for acting quickly and working with us and Public Health England to help manage this outbreak.

"They reopened their factory on 23 June on a reduced capacity and only colleagues that have been tested and declared fit to return are on site."

Ms Spencer-Henshall added that they were "satisfied" with health and safety measures at the Kober site, which include separation of colleagues on different shifts and checking the temperature of workers before they enter the site.

  5. Litter-strewn city park sparks 'clean and tidy' appealpublished at 12:54 British Summer Time 25 June 2020

People are being asked to respect outdoor spaces in South Yorkshire during the current heatwave after one city park was pictured covered in litter this morning.

    Litter at Endcliffe park

Endcliffe Park in Sheffield is shown in one photograph strewn with rubbish after the popular spot was crowded with sun-worshippers yesterday - the hottest day of the year so far.

Sheffield City Council has appealed for people to respect communal areas such as parks and to keep them "clean and tidy".

In an earlier statement, the authority said: "We’ve put in extra resources and are working really hard to keep them looking lovely and safe for visitors, but we need everyone to do their bit.

"If the bins are full, please take your rubbish home and recycle what you can."

However, the council says that after seeing the latest pictures showing litter, it would see if further messages were necessary in a bid to tackle the problem over the summer.

James Wilby, who has represented Britain at two world championships and participated at the Commonwealth Games, is supporting a petition which has been signed by thousands of people calling for swimming pools to be allowed to re-open .

The petition has been organised by governing body Swim England after swimming pools - as well as spas, indoor gyms and bowling alleys - weren't included in plans to reopen some leisure venues.

In a tweet, the York swimmer says: "This is crazy. Places of arguably greater risk opening before swimming pools and gyms!

"Physical fitness and mental wellbeing can be done safely in pools with Swim England working hard to provide support so venues are ready to go."

  10. Pub where drinkers hid in cupboards loses licencepublished at 10:38 British Summer Time 25 June 2020

A pub has been stripped of its licence after police found drinkers hiding in cupboards during the coronavirus lockdown.

    The Pitsmoor HotelImage source, Google

The Pitsmoor Hotel in Sheffield was raided by police on 24 April after reports it was still serving customers.

The Staffordshire Arms, also licensed to Paul Greasby, has had its licence removed too.

The decision was made at the council's licensing committee meeting on Tuesday.

In March, the government ordered that pubs, restaurants and other businesses must close in an attempt to reduce the spread of the Covid-19 virus, and the legislation said owners could be given a prohibition notice and fined if they opened their establishments.

If they broke the prohibition notice then magistrates could impose potentially unlimited fines.

The Pitsmoor Hotel was forced to shut after the raid on 24 April, with South Yorkshire Police and Sheffield City Council issuing the pub with a prohibition order.

But when police returned the next day, following reports from the public it was still serving customers, officers found people were on the roof "to make it look like no-one was inside", a report to the council licensing committee said, external.

The licence holder, Mr Greasby, had also been served a prohibition notice for The Staffordshire Arms in Burngreave.

Five councils, including Leeds, say emergency spending controls - so-called section 114 notices - could be needed due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Section 114 notices are issued in England when a council cannot achieve a balanced budget.

Nearly 150 authorities have forecast a combined budget shortfall of at least £3.2bn, the BBC has found.

The government said it was working on a "comprehensive plan" for councils.

Whitehall has already given £3.2bn funding to all English councils in two tranches to help cover coronavirus costs.

Staff at Barnsley Delivery Office were tested, with a number of people coming back positive, Royal Mail said.

It comes after a deep clean was carried out earlier this week following a positive test.

In a statement, Royal Mail said: "Following further positive tests for coronavirus at the Barnsley Delivery Office, we have taken the decision to close the office until Friday as a precautionary measure.

"During this time we will carry out an additional intense, enhanced clean of the building. We are working to keep disruption to mail deliveries to a minimum as we address the concerns of our colleagues.

"As part of this process, we are diverting mail to another nearby unit."

The Lamborghini had stopped on the main carriageway due to "mechanical failure" and was then hit from behind by a van, officers believe.

The van driver suffered head injuries, though they are not thought to be serious, police add.

The North York Moors Railway usually runs regular steam services from Pickering to Whitby, but staff were forced to close the line, shop and tearooms due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Chris Price, general manager of the railway, says members of the public and loyal members of staff have rallied together to show their support.

Mr Price said: "I’m incredibly optimistic about the railway’s future. However, the next few months are undeniably going to be a challenge for us.

"The amount raised will help secure us for a few more weeks. We’ve managed to drastically reduce running costs, but even in its closed state there are utilities, insurance, maintenance, and security.

"These costs will rise even further once the government’s job retention scheme ends in October.”

To cut costs, the railway has cancelled this year’s annual Steam Gala event, which was planned for September.
