The Arctic Corsair (above) is in need of preservation. It is the UK's only distant-water sidewinder trawler which is a floating attraction and open to the public.

The Spurn Lightship (below) played a key role in Hull’s maritime industries by guiding vessels as they navigated the Humber estuary, but needs to be renovated.

Both have been looked after by volunteers for the past 20 years.

However, Hull City Council is now seeking a shipyard to undertake major restoration works on the two vessels which it's hoped will preserve them for at least another century.

Councillor Daren Hale says: "These two ships are part of our maritime heritage. This contract to refurbish them will give them a new lease of life and put them centre stage of our Hull maritime city project.

"They both have a powerful story to tell and these extensive restoration and repairs will ensure they will be in the best possible condition for years to come."

  6. York car park use recovering 'incredibly' after lockdownpublished at 10:01 British Summer Time 14 August 2020

Car park use in York city centre is recovering “incredibly well” after the easing of the coronavirus lockdown and footfall on some shopping streets is close to pre-lockdown levels, councillors have been told.

Footfall on Parliament Street, which dropped significantly at the start of lockdown, is climbing back to normal levels and is currently just 16% lower than before the pandemic, according to city transport bosses.

Micklegate has been slower to recover and is only at two thirds of its normal levels of visitors, but the number of people in the city centre has risen steadily in the past seven weeks, they say.

James Gilchrist, assistant director of transport at City of York Council, added: "Car parking is generally recovering incredibly well. You can start to see how parking levels are increasing and are getting close to pre-Covid level.

"I think what we do recognise, though, is that the car is the mode of choice. So car parking may be recovering quickly because public transport isn’t recovering anywhere like at the same pace."

York's Bootham Row car park was back at nearly 90% capacity in July, with Castle and Nunnery Lane car parks also seeing an increasing number of customers, councillors were told.

The government has announced that the programme of pilots, which were paused at the end of July, can resume from this weekend.

That means the Crucible will welcome around 300 fans for the final two days.

If the pilots are a success the government says it could lead to other sports venues being opened to socially-distanced fans from 1 October.

"We are delighted to announce that a reduced crowd will be welcomed to all sessions of the final of the World Championship on Saturday and Sunday," World Snooker said, external.

"The piloting of a small number of sporting events to test the safe return of spectators will resume from 15 August with a view to reopening competition venues for sports fans, with social distancing measures in place from 1 October," the government said in a statement.

"This will commence with the final of the World Snooker Championship at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre during 15-16 August, with a full pilot programme to follow."

The World Snooker Championship became the first indoor live sports event in England to have crowds since lockdown, allowing some supporters in for the three sessions on 31 July.

Wayne Low, 47, of Driffield Road, Leconfield, and AGML Ltd, of which he is a director, face charges that they started to knock down the Travellers Rest in Long Riston between 27 November last year and 1 February.

They are due to appear before Beverley magistrates next Wednesday.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council alleges that Mr Low demolished most of the pub without informing the authority, or getting planning permission.

Councillor Brian Skow, who represents Long Riston, said demolishing the pub had been a “great loss” to the village.

“I’ve never seen villagers this upset before. It’s upset them and it’s upset us as councillors. It was a wonderful pub.”

On Monday, the council rejected plans by AGML and Richmond Properties, of which Mr Low is also a director, to build six houses on the Travellers Rest site and convert the surviving part of the pub into a new micropub..
