BT last held a consultation about the 16 boxes - many of which are in remote locations with poor mobile phone reception - eight months ago.

Their removal was eventually vetoed by Scarborough Borough Council.

In a report, Steve Wilson, the authority's planning policy and conservation manager, says: “It's disappointing BT has decided to try again to remove these phone boxes after such a short duration of time since the previous consultation.”

The report adds there were “vociferous objections” to the closure of a phone box in Goathland (pictured) when BT tried to remove it in the last consultation due to the village’s “non-existent mobile signal”.

The phone boxes the council says it'll fight to keep are in Commondale, Fryup, Eastfield, Egton Bridge, Egton, Littlebeck, Sleights, Goathland, Glaisdale, Grosmont, Newholm, Sneaton, Staintondale and Westerdale.

The consultation over the fate of the phone boxes closes in October.

Jonathan Bell (pictured top right), 52, decided to take on the challenge after learning the bill to repair the roof of All Saint’s Church in Cawthorne would be £92,000.

Mr Bell, a former Royal Navy diver, had been helping to clear the stone guttering of the church when he realised some of it had collapsed, allowing water to leak inside the walls.

He says he decided to take action as he was aware the church was facing "a race against time" to begin the work before winter set in.

He says: “We’ve got a hole in the church roof which, if it isn't sealed, could let water in which would get inside the Grade I-listed organ. It would devastate that part of the church and do irreparable damage."

Mr Bell will set off from the church on 23 August, run 9.2 miles, put on a church roof costume and run back to the church.

He'll be accompanied by his brother, Stephen Bell (pictured top left), 55, who will cycle alongside him.

The Reverend Browell, who has been the vicar at All Saints for five years, said: "Jonathan has been an absolute star, he’s an inspiration."

At about 12:05 this morning officers were dealing with reports of a suspected domestic abuse incident on Stratton Close when someone climbed onto the bonnet of a police vehicle and smashed the windscreen, police say.

In the second attack at about 12:45, a man was seen jumping on the roof of a police vehicle in Morpeth Street as officers were attempting to find a missing person.

The roof was so badly damaged it couldn't be driven any further, according to Humberside Police.

A 24-year old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and resisting arrest. A 41-year-old woman was also arrested on suspicion of racially abusing an officer.

Deputy Ch Con Chris Rowley said: "I do not and will not accept such reckless attacks on our vehicles or my officers being abused in this way.

"They come to work to protect people and keep our communities safe and I want to make it really clear that we will not tolerate them being attacked for doing their job.

“Furthermore, having two vehicles taken out of action could have a serious impact on our ability to attend incidents and keep people safe."

The staff members were all night shift workers at Camira Fabrics' Meltham Mills site and are now recovering at home, according to a joint statement between Kirklees Council, Public Health England and the company.

The firm reported the cases to Public Health England and has taken a "number" of precautionary measures, including deep cleaning all machinery and common areas, the statement adds.

The other night shift workers, about 15 people, have been asked to self-isolate for the next two weeks and will be offered testing at a mobile unit on site.

Several people have already been tested, with no further positive cases reported so far, the statement says.

Anyone else who may have come into contact with the affected people outside of work will be followed up by NHS Test and Trace and they may be advised to self-isolate for 14 days.

The company will continue to operate as normal during the daytime and the risk to local residents from this outbreak is "very low", the statement concludes.

  13. Bogus cop phone scam nets thousands from victimspublished at 12:42 British Summer Time 11 August 2020

Officers say residents are being "relentlessly targeted" by the man who tells victims he is DC Mason Greenwood from West Yorkshire Police.

They have received more than 20 reports form across North Yorkshire in the past two weeks alone.

The fraudster says a relative of the victim is in police custody in possession of the victim’s debit or credit cards, or that there is a fraud investigation ongoing and the victim’s money is not safe.

He then asks the individual to move money from their account into another account for safe-keeping, but the money is actually transferred to the scammer, according to North Yorkshire Police.

Safeguarding Officer Andy Fox says: “Scammers work very hard to manipulate and build trust with their victim and, unfortunately, thousands of pounds have already been lost to this fraudster."

Anyone receiving a call of this nature is being advised to hang up immediately.

The authority will increase testing and make it more available, working with the national NHS Test and Trace system, according to Tim Swift.

Mr Swift said: "Due to the increased restrictions we are under in the north of England, and the rising rate of Covid-19 infection in Calderdale, we have been given the opportunity to play a greater role in the national NHS Test and Trace programme.

"Our role is to build on the national programme with local support and knowledge, by following up people who have tested positive for Covid-19 that the national team haven’t been able to contact."

Mr Swift said it was vital that NHS Test and Trace is able to identify anyone who has been in close contact with someone who has coronavirus.

"That means we can provide advice to those people on how to keep themselves safe and keep their friends and family safe.

"Adding in a local element to NHS Test and Trace means we can also offer additional support to people who need it," he said.

“When we receive details of people to follow up locally we will send a text to them with details on what they need to do and where they can get support locally.

“We’ll follow this up with a phone call, and if necessary the multilingual Calderdale NHS Test and Trace team will visit them at their home to provide further support," he added.

  15. District nurse sought following fatal Rotherham collisionpublished at 11:17 British Summer Time 11 August 2020

An appeal for witnesses, including a woman thought to be a district nurse, has been launched following a fatal collision in South Yorkshire earlier this year.

A black Honda motorbike and a grey Nissan Navara pick-up truck collided in the village of Thrybergh, near Rotherham, at about 15:50 on Wednesday 24 June, say police.

The motorbike was being ridden along Carr Lane in the direction of Kilnhurst and the Nissan was travelling in the opposite direction when the two collided.

The 25-year-old bike rider suffered serious head injuries and died in hospital the next day.

The incident is still under investigation and police say they are keen to speak to anyone who saw what happened.

Officers particularly want to hear from a woman thought to be a district nurse who it's believed gave medical assistance to the injured motorbike rider.

Two men travelling in a black Mark 3 Ford Escort who stopped at the scene are also being sought.

Anyone with CCTV or dash cam footage of the incident is also being urged to contact police.

The 6in snake was spotted last week on the production line floor of the factory in North Ferriby.

It was covered in orange powder which is used at the site.

Staff put a box over the snake and called the RSPCA for help.

RSPCA Inspector Lucy Green took the snake to a specialist vets where they cleaned the powder off and checked the snake over.

Inspector Green said: "The snake looked like it had been in a bag of Cheetos.

“It was quite a difficult task to dust the snake off, but they managed it and I was able to collect the snake for release back into the wild.

"This is the tiniest one I’ve seen. I’m very happy to have been able to get it back where it belongs."

Adult grass snakes, the UK's largest snake, can grow to more than 1m in length but are harmless.

  18. Sheffield scientists' bird behaviour breakthroughpublished at 10:08 British Summer Time 11 August 2020

    PA Media

Scientists in South Yorkshire have used mathematical modelling developed by computer pioneer, maths genius and codebreaker Alan Turing to learn more about the behaviour of birds.

Researchers used the method to study why flocks of long-tailed tits segregate themselves into different parts of the landscape.

The team tracked the birds around Sheffield's Rivelin Valley which eventually produced a pattern across the landscape, and using maths helped the researchers to reveal the behaviours causing these patterns.

Natasha Ellison, the PhD student at the University of Sheffield who led the study, said: "Mathematical models help us understand nature in an extraordinary amount of ways and our study is a fantastic example of this.

"Long-tailed tits are too small to be fitted with GPS trackers like larger animals, so researchers follow these tiny birds on foot, listening for bird calls and identifying birds with binoculars.

"The field work is extremely time consuming and without the help of these mathematical models these behaviours wouldn't have been discovered."

Long-tailed tisImage source, Billy Clapham/PA Wire

Flocks of long-tailed tits are less likely to avoid places where they have interacted with relatives and more likely to avoid larger flocks, whilst preferring the centre of woodland, according to the findings published in the Journal of Animal Ecology.

It was previously unknown why the birds live in separate parts of the same area, despite there being plenty of food to sustain multiple flocks and the birds not showing territorial behaviour.

The equations used to understand the birds are similar to those developed by Alan Turing to describe how animals get their spotted and striped patterns.

Before the current study, these mathematical ideas had been used to understand the patterns made by territorial animals such as coyotes, meerkats and even human gangs.

  20. New appeal over Romanian HGV driver missing for a yearpublished at 09:05 British Summer Time 11 August 2020

Police in East Yorkshire are renewing their appeal for help finding a Romanian lorry driver who disappeared a year ago.

    Christian BarbuImage source, Humberside Police

Christian Barbu failed to disembark from the Pride of Hull ferry on Saturday 10 August 2019 following a trip with his lorry from Rotterdam to Hull.

He had boarded the P&O ferry in Rotterdam the previous day and while his vehicle and belongings were found, Mr Barbu was "nowhere to be found", according to police.

Following his disappearance, Humberside Police issued a missing person appeal, but a year on there has been no further news and Mr Barbu has still not been found.

The Humberside force says it's appealing again for anyone with information about Mr Barbu to get in touch.
